This position will be located at Nathan & Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site, 7850 N. State Hwy V, Ash Grove, 65604. Position will work Wednesday-Sunday, 8am-4:30pm with Monday & Tuesdays off from April-October. Schedule will allow for one weekend off per month. Must have ability to work occasional evenings, holidays, and occasional overnight stays.

  • Oversee and manage the overall operation and maintenance of the Nathan & Olive Boone Homestead State Historic Site (Boone Homestead), including operation and maintenance of day use areas, trail network, historic building, and grounds, visitor center, small maintenance and repair projects, and visitor service functions.
  • Supervise permanent, seasonal, temporary, and volunteer employees in the protection, maintenance, operation, and repair of the historic site, natural and cultural resources, facilities, equipment, and systems. Skill in managing and collaborating with staff.
  • Plan and direct natural or cultural history interpretation, resource management and research for the Boone Homestead.
  • Plan and coordinate special events, group outings, and special program requests with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Colaborate with other agencies and/or stakeholders always seeking for opportunities to partner to better serve visitor or protect resources
  • Skill in reviewing, analyzing, interpreting, and/or preparing federal or state laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to assigned program.
  • Plan and direct natural resource stewardship activities.
  • Ability to develop budget and project recommendations and perform administrative functions including revenue and procurement.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, personal injuries, disturbances, natural disasters, and any other significant events within the site.


This position is required to obtain and maintain appropriate fire training and certifications including S-130 & S-190 or equivalent. If required and if you do not currently possess this certification, you will be given six months to obtain necessary certification.

  • Stewardship (Resources): Basic knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of natural and cultural features along with special ecological stewardship requirements; capable of gaining experience in performing stewardship tasks required for strenuous outdoor work; ability to appear before the public, makes clear and convincing oral presentations; give out general information, conduct interpretive educational programs and conduct tours about natural and cultural history in an effective way; assist in supervising, recruiting, training and evaluating seasonal and volunteer staff.
  • Interpretation (Resources): Ability to coordinate, manage and direct interpretive or educational programing related to natural or cultural resources in a way that conveys significance to visitors; connecting them to personal relevance, shared learning, meeting specific learning objectives (i.e. educator or community needs), informing public about compliance and safety, supporting management of natural or cultural resources representative of national heritage, and enhancing mutual understanding for individual and social benefit.


Equivalent to those typically gained by:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university can include: Park Management, Parks and Recreation, Wildlife Management, Forestry, Botany, Biology, Natural Sciences, History, Archaeology, Business of Public Administration or related field AND 5 or more years of management, supervision and participation in interpretation, preservation, protection, maintenance and enhancement of state parks and historic sites. (Additional education or experience may substitute for the required education or experience)


Training, certification, and/or education in continuous process improvement programs such as Lean Six Sigma as well as completion of Missouri Way, Leadership Academy, and similar programs is preferred.
