Job Description

TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

PLEASE NOTE: The salary listed on this posting will receive a 5% legislative appropriated increase effective 9/1/2024.

Under the direction of the Park Assistant Superintendent, this position performs routine (journey-level) operations work in a state park. This position is responsible for interpretive and maintenance duties of Eisenhower State Park. Assists with daily operations, maintenance, repair, cultural/natural resource interpretation, presentation of outreach and educational programs and routine customer service. Duties include facility repair such as electrical, carpentry and plumbing. Grounds maintenance to include trail maintenance, general equipment maintenance and repair. Assists with visitor registration and revenue collection. Conducts hikes/tours on rough terrain, programs, and assists with development of exhibits and interpretive programming. Provides direction to volunteers, interns and alternative workforce. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.


Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education :

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

Experience :

No experience required.

Licensure :

Must possess a valid State driver's license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS :

Education :

One year of experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs may substitute for 30 semester hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

Education :

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Park Administration, Recreation & Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Anthropology/Archeology, History, Interpretation or closely related field.

Experience :

Two years general maintenance experience in repairing buildings, equipment, plumbing or electrical systems or grounds maintenance such as, operating lawn mowers, tractors, trucks or power hand tools;

Experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs;

Experience in natural and cultural resource management;

Experience in customer service and/or working with the public.

Licensure :

Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) Certification from the National Association for Interpretation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Knowledge of natural and cultural resource management and conservation principles;

Knowledge of interpretation/education programs and techniques such as living history, exhibit development and special events;

Knowledge of developing, implementing, managing, publicizing and evaluating related interpretive programs;

Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, janitorial and mechanical maintenance and repair tasks;

Knowledge of general custodial duties;

Knowledge of trail maintenance techniques;

Knowledge of basic mathematics;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;

Skill in developing beneficial relationships and promotional partnerships with volunteer individuals, groups and external agencies/organizations;

Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment;

Skill in developing and presenting accurate and creative guided tours, educational and interpretive programs to audiences of all ages;

Skill in assisting with various park duties such as maintenance, administration or customer service duties on an as-needed basis;

Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

Skill in managing several projects simultaneously;

Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions;

Ability to perform work in accordance with resource conservation principles;

Ability to survey customers for program quality;

Ability to handle complaints, emergencies and a high volume of people;

Ability to work under stressful conditions;

Ability to handle cash, collect fees and sell licenses;

Ability to learn an on-line registration system;

Ability to coordinate the work of others;

Ability to act as the volunteer coordinator for the park;

Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities;

Ability to lead tours/hikes on rough terrain;

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 80 lbs.;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use;

Required to work 40 hours per week, includes flexible schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Required to respond to emergency situations;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to lead tours/hikes in rugged terrain;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 80 lbs.;

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
