Job Description

The County of Dallas, founded in 1846, is the second most populous county in Texas with a vibrant and diverse population of nearly three million residents of varying ages, backgrounds, nationalities, and faiths spread over 49 cities. One-fourth of the population is foreign-born, which contributes to the County’s unique vibrancy. Located in north-central Texas and comprising of 909 square miles of primarily flat, heavy Blackland Prairie, Dallas County is part of the largest metropolitan area in the southern United States and is the largest landlocked metropolitan area in the Country. The Trinity River runs through the County and is filled with vibrant wildflowers that bloom in the spring. With a humid subtropical climate, the County is characterized by the southern plains of the United States.

The Dallas County Public Defender’s Office (DCPDO) is the second oldest Public Defender’s Office in the State of Texas and the first of its kind. The Office is one of the largest Public Defender Offices in the State of Texas and has been recognized as a model for new Public Defender Offices throughout the State. The Office takes a holistic approach to criminal defense in order to benefit society and its clients. The DCPDO is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader who will center their leadership around the concepts of transformative justice, diversity, inclusion and belonging. The ideal candidate will foster an environment for defenders who are passionate, skilled, and ardent client advocates. Qualified candidates have graduated from an accredited law school and should possess seven (7) years of experience practicing criminal law. Candidates should possess, or have the ability to possess within one year, a license to practice law in the state of Texas and should be a member of the State Bar of Texas.

 

The annual salary range for the Chief Public Defender is $216,000 - $239,400; placement within this range is dependent on qualifications and experience.
