The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office is seeking a qualified IT professional to join their team as a Sheriff's Office Network Analyst!

About the Position

As the Sheriff's Office Network Analyst, you will perform complex technical duties for the Sheriff's Office Telecommunications Bureau, including evaluating current network systems on varied factors and recommending solutions. This is a high-level network and systems engineering position responsible for managing and maintaining multiple advanced technologies throughout the department. Additional duties include:

  • Assisting Communications Technicians in troubleshooting radio links at remote mountain sites that connect into the network
  • Planning, designing, configuring, upgrading, administering, and maintaining the Sheriff’s Office network systems, including LANs, WANs, Internet, and all aspects of hardware, software, operating systems, and inter-connectivity
  • Performing troubleshooting, testing, and implementation
  • Collaborating with Sheriff's Office Communications Technicians and IT, as well as the Information Services Department (ISD)
  • Identifying potential performance or capacity issues and planning and implementing modifications to avert problems
  • Ensuring rigorous application of information security/assurance policies, principles, and practices in the delivery of network services

The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem solver with the ability to work with both technical and non-technical staff, will be able to work in a dynamic environment with competing priorities, and will possess:

  • Expertise extending beyond traditional networking into specialized fields such as network security, radio telecommunications systems, and electronics
  • The expertise and breadth of knowledge to proactively address security challenges and integrate cutting-edge technologies
  • A Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or CompTIA Network+ Certification
  • A Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone Operator License
  • An extensive understanding of DC power systems, microwave communications, and Land Mobile Radio transmission equipment
  • The ability to read, understand, and draft circuit schematics and block diagrams
  • A strong background in radio frequency (RF) theory and maintaining network hardware components
  • The ability to interact confidently and professionally with team members, stakeholders, and external vendors
  • Active listening skills, compassion, and a collaborative team approach
  • Experience in enterprise endpoint management and security
  • An Associate of Science degree in Computer Science, Networking, or Information Technology

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally this would include:

Experience: Three years of experience in designing, installing, and maintaining complex multi-site LANs and WANs.

Education: The equivalent to graduation from a two-year college with major coursework in a related field; and

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: network and IT architectures; available bandwidth concepts and resources; network management systems concepts and methods; advanced network technologies; IT security methods and policies; agency-level business and mission requirements; and project management methods and principles.

Working knowledge of: customer service protocol; operating environments sufficient to install, configure, and maintain operating systems components.

Ability to: develop contingency plans to ensure continuous availability and accessibility of network resources in the event of emergencies; design network architectures; conduct cost-benefit analyses and total cost of ownership and capacity studies; establish security practices; develop contingency and recovery plans; manage and maintain network protocols; provide Intranet or Internet gateways; and coordinate other actions to ensure the implementation of networks that support mission requirements; evaluate and define infrastructure requirements; select hardware and software components; assemble installation teams; coordinate network implementation planning; and oversee testing and implementation; lead the implementation of major projects.

BACKGROUND PROCESS

Being part of the Sheriff's Office and being expected to keep the public safe requires a thorough background investigation process. This process includes an assessment of prior work history, verifying educational experiences, court reports, public records searches, and understanding past patterns relating to drug usage, financial patterns, etc. This entails gathering a significant amount of information from job candidates and speaking to former employers, friends, family members, etc. Polygraphs, drug tests, and medical and physical examinations are also part of this process.
