Job Description:

This Immunization Nurse position in Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) involves clinic and community setting public health nursing work to promote and protect the health of individuals, families, and populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences. This position is located with the JCPH clinic services which provides immunization services and sexual health services to our community. The Public Health Nurse works as part of a team to deliver high-quality, preventive health services.

The ideal candidate has strong emotional intelligence and is passionate about health equity, with experience in a clinical nursing setting, and specifically in a public health role. This individual will excel at developing relationships and trust with clients and is able to constructively engage with both internal and external partners in the local public health system .

Schedule :

This position keeps a consistent schedule working a 4-day work week, with occasional Friday evenings, and weekend shifts.

Compensation :

Hiring Range: $67,000 - $7 7 ,000 USD Annual

Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills.

Essential Duties:

  • Deliver individualized, culturally competent, ethical client care regarding health management and psycho-social services to individuals and families. Deliver person centered care based on positive, respectful relationships utilizing reflective communication skills.
  • Provide comprehensive health assessments of individuals and families across the lifespan to identify barriers to achieving optimal health. Assess individuals and families for psycho-social issues, including children at risk for growth issues, behavioral and developmental concerns and abuse and neglect; women at risk of postpartum depression; other mental health concerns; substance use; and families at risk for parenting concerns and domestic violence. Interview clients to obtain personal and routine health data in accordance with established policies and procedures; weigh and measure clients, measure blood pressure and temperature. Prepare and update client records; analyze patient and family history; and consult with other staff members to determine health risks.
  • May assist with basic laboratory operations to assist sexual health and family planning APRN team as needed and agreed upon by super visor.
  • Documentation and communication of client care through maintaining of electronic records and traditional paper files. Collects appropriate client data, assures quality and accuracy of the data. Performs routine administrative tasks incidental to nursing functions.
  • Educate clients both individually or in groups, including professional partners, coalitions, and community health promotion stakeholders) general health promotion for prenatal and postpartum health, child birth , breastfeeding, birth control, nutrition, child growth and development, parenting skills, mental and behavioral health promotion, and harm reduction. Illness and disease health management and changing high risk behaviors (such as tobacco or other substance use. Respond to health care emergencies as needed. Review client immunization records for compliance and counsel clients about vaccine and medication reactions and effectiveness. Prepare, and administer immunizations and medications to clients per medical director's standing orders. Participate in JCPH emergency preparedness trainings as appropriate . Perform duties as assigned during a natural or bio-terrorism emergency.
  • Collaboration and department representation with community agencies, boards, and coalitions. Work with various health care professionals in community-based agencies and groups according to client and program needs. Serve as client advocate in the health care, social service and judicial communities. Create and maintain partnerships with community agencies to obtain essential client materials and resources. Promote department programs to community and maintain awareness of current community health care needs.
  • Participate in program planning and evaluation, community health needs assessments and policy development as appropriate . Ability to use and understand data, to guide programmatic decision making. Responsible for ongoing relevant professional education. Provide public health nursing leadership as needed. Precept and mentor nursing students during community/public clinical health rotations. Serve as Preceptor and mentor for new employees.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing and minimum one-year of health clinic related experience;
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, applicants will meet minimal qualifications if they have an Associate’s degree and 3 years of experience.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Colorado, or in a state that has enacted the RN Nurse Licensure Compact at time of employment.
  • Current CPR Certification at hire.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Preferred - two (2) additional years of experience above the minimum requirements
  • Strongly prefer experience in public health nursing, including family planning, sexually transmitted infection,and immunization experience.
  • Experience in use of Electronic Health Records.
  • Spanish speaking ability preferred, but not required . JCPH has a policy to additionally compensate workforce members who are able to demonstrate bilingual language skills.
