What you’ll do:

  • Short-Term Responsibilities:
  • Be cross-trained in the 6 areas of the HB/GSP/CF Mutation areas of the laboratory including HB, CAH, CH, GAL, BIO, CF-IRT and CF-Mutation
  • Provide accurate results in a timely manner.
  • Notify the appropriate personnel of abnormal results or trends in the area that they are working in.
  • Appropriately test, report, and record all quality control data associated with tests conducted.
  • Daily receiving and processing of Newborn Screening Samples
  • Long Term responsibilities:
  • Maintain engagement and training, pass knowledge on to newer staff, be a role model, and coach and mentor new staff.
  • Be available to assist Senior Scientist with any troubleshooting of an assay or instrument.
  • Be willing to learn new test procedures and assist in validation studies.
  • Be ready and willing to fill supervisory positions as they become available so that we maintain a strong, knowledgeable work force.
  • To be cross trained in all methods of the Newborn Screening Laboratory, which include Amino Acid Disorders, Fatty Acid Disorders, Organic Acid Disorders, Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs), and X-Linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD), and result analysis for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
  • Maintain proficiency in all cross-trained areas
  • Maintain instrumentation and assist senior scientist in any troubleshooting


Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in a physical sciences field. The candidate must be able to perform lab test manipulations using both hands and to lift bottles of reagents on and off carts. The ability to read detailed printout of results and QC data will be needed, along with the knowledge of computer use. The candidate must be willing to handle biological specimens. There may be times when extended work hours or work week may be required. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
