Engineering Technician- Arborist

2-year Pilot

$36.37 - $46.43 an hour

Do you have a passion for urban forestry and building healthy communities? The Town of Los Gatos Department of Parks and Public Works is looking for an individual that wants to develop and grow their experience by supporting the Town’s street tree program. The individual will support the Town’s restoration of a healthy street tree program and reduction in heat island effect by:
  • Updating existing mapping of street trees throughout the Town including updating the Town’s GIS to reflect current conditions.
  • Working with the Town Arborist to develop a work plan to replace missing street trees throughout the Town and bid the installation of the missing trees.
  • Evaluating the Town’s approved street tree list and make recommendations for updating the list.


Duties and Responsibilities

The Position

The Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate loves working with trees and understands their value in urban areas. They will have background in forestry, urban forestry, or horticulture and at least basic knowledge of GIS and mapping principles. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of various tree species native to the Bay area and their habitat value. They will also have an understanding of how various trees may impact street infrastructure such as sidewalks, paving and utilities.

Responsibilities of the Candidate: Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Work independently to review and update existing street tree mapping and tagging, with limited support from the Town Arborist and Parks and Public Works Superintendent.
  • Recommend replacement trees for areas where trees are missing and develop mapping and list of trees suitable for contractors to bid on the replacement of trees.
  • Oversee the installation of the trees.
  • Update GIS layers with trees installed through this program.
  • Review the Town’s policies and ordinances related to trees and recommend updates or changes.


Minimum Qualifications

Work Schedule: The hours and days are flexible with up to 20 hours per week available. The work location can be flexible depending on the qualifications of the applicant. This position is funded for two years and limited to 936 hours per year. However, employment might end sooner, depending on the needs of the Department. Extra-help positions are paid hourly and are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the extra-help assignment.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of high school or the equivalent supplemented by course work in advanced mathematics or drafting.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and ability is qualifying.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Candidates selected for this position must have a valid California driver's license or equivalent and be at least 18 years old on the hire date.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Native trees of the southern Bay Area, including their habitat values and suitability for various conditions.
    • Urban forestry / street tree management principles.
    • Mapping principles with GIS experience desirable.
    • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).
