The Communications department is seeking a COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR to join their team. This position performs community engagement and outreach services for the Communications Division to assist in county efforts to engage with constituents, facilitate communication between constituents, elected officials and staff, and make government services and processes transparent.

Representative Examples of Work

Works with county staff to facilitate community engagement with residents through a variety of digital and traditional communications channels, including the County’s online engagement platform, events calendar and print materials. Advises county commissioners and department staff on engagement and outreach strategy and executes those strategies. Addresses constituent questions and feedback received online, by email, phone and social media, which often includes complex inquiries from the public, government officials and others that require interpretation of County or departmental policies, state law and knowledge of County operations and services. Provides information to County departments and facilitates interdepartmental communication on public inquiries. Establishes and maintains relationships with community organizations and community councils to facilitate targeted communication of county news and updates. Researches and collaborates with governmental partners on strategies to communicate to hard-to-reach members of the public. Attends and regularly presents at monthly All Community Council meetings. Coordinates, prepares budgets for, and executes regular outreach events in rural areas, working closely with community councils and partner organizations. Leverages communications technologies, including content management systems, the County’s engagement website, social media platforms and publication software to provide information and produce content to enhance two-way communication between county employees and residents. Assists staff in other departments with leveraging these technologies. Assists communications team in developing communications strategy, public messaging and content and helps lead community outreach for County operations and programs. Assists with County’s communication efforts during the Montana Legislature. Coordinates and executes large-scale events involving the public and/or media. Assists with event logistics, prepares and manages event budgets. Writes, edits and produces communications for the county commissioners, including drafting original content and editing work of department heads and elected officials. Facilitates internal communication, through production of employee newsletter and other methods, to help build a positive, community-oriented work environment. Assists leadership and staff with day-to-day communications needs, including writing and proofing letters, webpages and social media posts; editing presentations; photographing events to provide visual content; and designing graphics.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree. Degrees best suited for this position include communications, journalism, political science and public relations.
  • Requires three years of advanced administrative work in an office setting.
  • Requires experience providing customer service over the phone and face-to-face.
  • Requires broad experience in technology platforms.



Physical/Environmental Demands

The work is commonly performed in an office setting with a considerable amount of time using a computer keyboard. May require occasional light lifting (up to 20 pounds). Requires attendance at meetings outside the workplace; requires occasional attendance at meetings or events outside normal business hours. Requires driving.

Excellent Medical Health Benefits– Group health benefits, including dental and vision coverage, are available to eligible County employees. The medical health benefits premium is covered for full-time employees. The County contribution is pro-rated on hours paid for part-time employees. The employee pays the premium portion for dependent coverage. Family health benefits coverage is $258.00 per pay period.

Medical deductible is $500 for an individual and $1,000 for a family.

Public Employees Retirement System– Montana public employees of the state, university system, local governments and certain employees of school districts are covered by the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Sheriffs' Retirement System (SRS)– A public pension plan for all Montana Sheriffs hired after July 1, 1974 and Detention Officers hired after July 1, 2005.

Supplemental Retirement Benefitsare offered through Valic or Nationwide.

Sick Leave– Full-time employees accrue 7.38hours per month and are eligible to use sick leave once you have been an employee for 90 days.The accrual is pro-rated for part-time employees.

Vacation Leave– Full-time employees accrue 9.24 hours per month and are eligible to use leave after continuous employment for a period of 6 full months. The accrual is pro-rated for part-time employees.

Holidays– The County observes eleven legal holidays in even numbered years and ten legal holidays in odd numbered years.

Paid Parental Leave (PPL)-In recognition of the importance of bonding and care of a newborn child or a child placed for adoption, Missoula County 6 continuous weeks of PPL to eligible full-time employees that have been with the county for 180 days. The hours are pro-rated for part-time employees.
