Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in the operation and / or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility. In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR

One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR

An Associate’s or higher-level degree, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR

Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience

Duties Description

The incumbent will work in Park Operations under the direction of the Park Manager or designee. The incumbent will perform the following duties:
• Provide after-hours coverage for the non-emergency 24-hour operation Park Operations Support desk.
• Monitor, answer, and respond appropriately to inquiries and calls for assistance during overnight hours. Each shift will consist of a public-facing staff member assigned to the desk and at least one staff member assigned to field response and roving duties.
• Maintain logs of all activities and calls during each shift, ensuring appropriate measures are taken while coordinating and communicating with response team members and management.
• Receive telephone calls and in-person reports and requests for assistance from the public.
• Register incoming campers and distribute “late-keys.”
• Patrol camping and recreational areas, interact with patrons, and provide information and support as needed.
• Assist with nuisance wildlife complaints.
• Monitor radio communications and answer calls.
• Communicate and coordinate with the New York State Park Police dispatch as appropriate.
• Act as a point of contact for after-hour events.
• Enforce park rules and regulations and inform New York State Park Police as necessary.
• Inspect and report on the general condition of specific operational areas or the facility as a whole.
• Conduct minor maintenance repairs on cabins, cottages, and public restrooms.
• Clear debris from park roads and bike baths.
• Perform snow removal activities as needed.
• Restock restroom supplies.
• Supervise seasonal staff as assigned.
• Provide assessment reports to management regarding call-outs for specialized personnel.
• Perform call-outs of operations and skilled trades staff during weekends, evenings, and overnight hours using a rotating call-out schedule.
• Communicate with and check in on camp assistance program volunteers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Comments

OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.
• Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and possess other basic computer skills.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner under stressful conditions.
• Must be able to operate a switchboard telephone and communications radio, and exercise appropriate telephone and radio etiquette.
• Must be self-motivated and able to work independently in a highly responsible manner with limited supervision.
• The incumbent will receive training on First Aid/CPR/AED, ATV/UTV operation, and basic chainsaw use.
