JOB SUMMARY

The Wastewater Technician I position is a progressive experience position responsible for monitoring equipment, operating equipment, recording data, collecting samples, and system process control, in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Analyzes and monitors potable water production and treatment, and wastewater treatment system processes, and identifies and implements simple process adjustments to ensure optimum performance of plant.
  • Operates and maintains process equipment at facilities and submits work orders for corrective maintenance to be performed.
  • Checks engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, chemical feed systems, and other equipment.
  • Records readings, changes charts, regulates and adjusts processes to meet changing operational needs.
  • Collects, preserves, and properly stores samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Monitors and performs housekeeping duties to insure a safe working environment.
  • Performs basic process control measurements, testing of DO, pH and Residual Analysis meters, etc.
  • Lubricates, dismantles, and assembles parts and equipment.
  • Participates in the troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of a variety of equipment including pumps, piping and valves.
  • Calculates basic level mathematics.
  • Performs emergency chemical release responses, containment, and evacuation procedures.
  • Conducts regular tours of the facilities.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and public relations.
  • May train and mentor other new employees.
  • Participates in various special projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


DECISION MAKING

  • The Wastewater Technician I works under general supervision.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Obtain a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class “D” Wastewater Treatment Operator License within six months of assignment.
  • Obtain a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class “C” Wastewater Treatment Operator License within three years of assignment.
  • Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License.
  • Pass a physical examination for Chemical Hazardous Material Responses and Respiratory Protection.
  • Perform position specific physical testing.
  • Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Business Administration or related field from an institution accredited by a recognized accrediting agency.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds occasionally and pushing/pulling a maximum force of 70 pounds. Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope.

Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to inclement weather; wastewater; mechanical, electrical, chemical and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; deep excavations; and animals, snakes and poisonous insects. Required to comply with requirements as specified in applicable regulations for personal protective equipment, including clearance for use of respiratory protection and other associated equipment. If part of the emergency response team, must be able to complete the requirements as specified in applicable regulations for Hazardous Materials Emergency Response, including clearance for use of respiratory protection and other associated protective equipment. Ability to take a lead role in emergency response team during chemical release incidents and/or drills. Operates a company vehicle on a daily basis.

Required to work hours other than regular schedule such as days, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call and rotating shifts.
