Job Description

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under general supervision of section manager, this is a first line supervisory position over the work of a crew in a specific area; including operation, construction, repair and maintenance of vehicles, parks, playgrounds, special facilities, roads and parkways, medians, gardens and green areas; plans, assigns and schedules proper use of personnel and equipment; responsible for worker compliance with regulations and plans; reviews plans and specifications with supervisor, and performs related duties.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Crew Leader Supervisor is a first-line supervisory classification over the work of a crew in a specific assigned area.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Leads, oversees, coordinates, and participates in a variety of maintenance and repair operations for, vehicle repairs, construction projects, special facility setup, parks and playgrounds, landscape maintenance activities and other assigned projects for the City of San Luis.
  • Plans project work and orders supplies, materials, and necessary equipment required for project completion.
  • Coordinates work assignments with other work units, agencies, or contractors to minimize service disruptions.
  • Receives, inspects, and inventories supplies and equipment and coordinates the repair and/or replacement of defective equipment.
  • Ensures security of all departmental tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Performs daily control reviews, monitors productivity, and enforces safety practices and procedures.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates staff; gives instructions, monitors employee attendance, enforces discipline, reviews performance, and maintains employee records.
  • Ensures the safety and security of departmental employees and the general public.
  • May participate in departmental budget preparation and monitors expenses.
  • May obtains bids, requests funds, and participates in the selection of tools, equipment and supplies required for grounds maintenance and landscape activities.
  • Advises supervisor of grounds maintenance issues and recommends solutions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of employee supervision, training, and evaluation.
  • Project management and scheduling techniques.
  • Tools/equipment/materials used in maintenance activities, including irrigation systems.
  • Operation, maintenance and repair of a variety of tools, equipment, materials, and vehicles.
  • Sanitary standards/regulations and safety procedures.
  • Principles and practices of budget preparation and monitoring expenditures.

Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and interacting with the public.
  • Determine and provide appropriate landscape care and maintenance.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate employees and schedule work assignments and activities.
  • Schedule, direct, and participate in grounds maintenance tasks which may require heavy lifting.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of tools, equipment, materials, and vehicles.
  • Inspect and evaluate grounds maintenance activities.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Required:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of full-time facility maintenance, equipment maintenance, landscaping, grounds or related work.
  • Depending upon the needs of the City, the incumbent of this class may be needed to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English as a condition of employment.
  • A valid Arizona driver’s license is at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis.

Desired/Preferred:
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • San Luis residency preferred.

Physical Demands

Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
The employee may work outside subject to extreme heat, dust, and machine noise while performing maintenance activities at various City facilities or operations. Certain positions within the classification may require availability to work flexible schedule.

LIFE INSURANCE - The City provides eligible employees with a Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) benefit. This plan is administered by Standard.

Basic Life Benefit - $50,000.00

DISABILITY INSURANCE - Disability insurance is available to all employees who work 30 or more hours per week.

Short-Term Disability - Coverage begins on the 15th day of injury or sickness.
Duration of Benefits - 180 days

Maximum Weekly Benefit: $2,000.00

WORKER'S COMP - Insurance coverage for medical expenses and loss of income due to an on-the-job injury is provided by the City of San Luis for all employees.
