STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER PART-TIME
TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT

HOURLY RATE: $26.66*

THIS RECRUITMENT IS TO FILL TWO PART-TIME TEMPORARY VACANCIES IN THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT AND TO ESTABLISH AN ELIGIBILITY LIST TO BE USED FOR FUTURE TEMPORARY VACANCIES.

This temporary assignment is to perform street maintenance work and graffiti removal. Assignment hours will range from 20-29 hours/week, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Assignment duration approximately one year.

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled sewer and storm drain repairs and maintenance for the City's streets.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists in asphalt and concrete jobs; performs sign maintenance, graffiti removal, tree trimming and street sweeping.
  • Monitors the sewer system to inspect sewer flow at problem areas; performs flow studies and confined space entry.
  • Cleans catch basins before rain; maintains the storm drain system during rain events.
  • Paints street legends, including stop signs, cross walks and rail road signs.
  • Performs basic building maintenance, including painting, cleaning and general repairs.
  • Performs weed, litter and illegal dumping control and cleanup; maintains bus stops; disposes of dead animals.
  • Operates heavy equipment.
  • Responds to spills to contain and prevent entry into the City's storm drain system.
  • Cleans tools and equipment.
  • Assists with the excavation of utilities and other special projects.
  • Maintains grounds and performs other maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Operates the vactor truck to clean and maintain the sewer and storm drain system.
  • May perform meter reading for utility billing.
  • May be required to perform standby and on-call duties as assigned; and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Vernon and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years of street maintenance and repair experience.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of street and water distribution system maintenance and repair.
  • Street painting methods and equipment.
  • Sign maintenance practices.
  • Concrete and asphalt repair methods and practices.
  • Customer service standards and protocols.
Skill in:
  • Using power and hand tools.
  • Operating various motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A valid California State Class B Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
Other certifications may be required based on area of assignment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to work in trenches or confined spaces. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 60 pounds.

Retirement Benefit : Retirement benefits are provided by the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS):

Effective January 1, 2013, newly hired non-safety employees who are new CalPERS members, as defined by the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 ("PEPRA"), will be enrolled in the CalPERS 2% at 62 benefit formula. New members will be required to pay 7% as their member contribution.

An employee who is a "classic" member of CalPERS, will be enrolled in the CalPERS 2.7% at 55 benefit formula. Classic employees urrently pay an 8% employee contribution and a 3% share of the employer contribution.

Cafeteria Benefits Plan : The City offers a monthly allowance towards the purchase of a HMO, PPO or HSA medical plan for the employee and their family members. Holiday pay : The City has 13 authorized holidays per calendar year.

Bilingual pay : Employees in eligible positions who successfully demonstrate Spanish speaking skills would be eligible to receive an additional $275.00 a month.
