Become a Safety Champion and Drive Continuous Improvement at Tacoma Rail! In this strategic role as Senior Safety Consultant, you'll help lead the charge in building a best-in-class safety program. You'll proactively develop and implement innovative initiatives to minimize workplace injuries and vehicle accidents. Leveraging your data analysis skills, you'll uncover trends across Tacoma Rail, shaping data-driven strategies and best practices to continuously improve safety and operational efficiency. The Senior Safety Consultant reports out to and interacts with the Rail Principal Safety Consultant, Operational Leadership, Tacoma Safety, Human Resources, Risk Management, and TPU Emergency Management.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Rail Safety
    • Assist in the development and administration of safety policies, procedures, training, and process improvement to include city-wide and Tacoma Rail specific programs.
    • Work collaboratively with Tacoma Rail leadership and employees to identify opportunities to develop job aids, best practices, or procedures to enhance safety and operational efficiencies.
    • Inspect customer facilities and document potential hazards to train crews
    • Investigate incidents to determine root cause and build a plan to mitigate future occurrences
    • Interpret federal and state regulations and provide recommendations on Labor & Industries and U.S. Department of Transportation regulatory requirements
    • Ensure compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR)
Data Analyzation & Strategy
  • Compile, assemble, and analyze data from various sources to create reports and make recommendations to assist management in developing safety strategies that align with our strategic plan
  • Present data to various audiences in order to provide an overview of various performance metrics within safety performance and trends and reduction of workplace injuries and vehicle incidents
Continuous Improvement
  • Collaborate with various Tacoma Rail personnel to identify opportunities to modernize or develop relevant job aids, best practices, and procedures to enhance safety and operational effectiveness
Compliance & Records Maintenance
  • Engage and coordinate with other City safety professionals to ensure various programs, policies, training, and occupational safety functions are properly implemented
  • Assist in the maintenance and review of various records to include, training of various types and craft specific certifications, and FRA/Grade crossing records and signal maintainers hours of service


Qualifications

Minimum Education*
Bachelor's degree in environmental health, safety, education or communications.

Minimum Experience*
4 years of experience administering health, safety, or loss prevention programs.

*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

Desired Qualifications
  • 4 years of progressively responsible experience in a rail organization
  • Working knowledge of the railroad industry's General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR)

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
  • Washington State Driver's License
  • Successfully obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card and maintenance thereafter. Must begin application process within 14 days of hire.
