Mining has a long history and is a major industry in the State of Missouri. Everyone uses a mined commodity daily. As the Environmental Scientist in the Department’s Land Reclamation Program, you will be part of the team that regulates reclamation of surface mine sites. A combination of office and field duties provides a great work environment and the opportunity to protect our natural resources. In addition, the position offers unique training and conference opportunities to further enhance your professional development.

This position will be located at the Lewis and Clark State Office Building, 1101 Riverside Drive, Jefferson City MO. Hours 8 am - 5 pm

  • Maintain and promote the Land Reclamation Information System database.
  • Process and issue surface mining permits for Industrial and Metallic Mineral (non-coal) mine sites.
  • Conduct field inspections of surface mines to ensure compliance with the Land Reclamation Act.


This position requires the individual to obtain and maintain a state issued driver’s license.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science or closely related field and 4-6 years of experience in natural science and computer science with emphasis on database programing or database management working with GIS data. (Additional education or experience may substitute for the required education or experience)
  • Ability to effectively manage data with Geographical Information System (GIS) software.
  • The position also requires the ability to work alone and in groups, occasional overnight travel, and ability to transverse rough terrain on foot.
