What You'll Be Doing

Do you have a passion for providing lifesaving services? Join us and become an integral part of our Public Safety Communications System team as a Public Safety Communication Systems Engineer. Responsible for serving as an engineering project leader and performing professional level engineering work on the Wake County Public Safety Communications Systems. This includes analyzing, coordinating, designing and maintaining telecommunications systems, equipment and associated circuits for the transmission, reception and display of voice, data and other information on wireless communication systems. Develop and provide methods for support and maintenance for the Wake County Public Safety Communications System and associated subsystems. Provide updates on the long-term (7 year) capital plan for any components associated with the Wake County Public Safety Communications Systems. Establish and maintain working association with peers in other Wake County and NC public agencies, e.g. Wake Schools, ITS, Wake Municipalities, NCLGISA, as well as appropriate professional organizations. Serve as a communications link to the IT Management Team, other IT Department work groups, other Wake County work groups and others outside of Wake County government.

About Our Team

The Wake County Public Safety Communications System is an integral part of Public Safety agencies’ ability to provide lifesaving services to the residents of Wake County. The Public Safety Communication Systems team directly supports over 7,000 subscriber radios spread across multiple Wake jurisdictions. There are 13 radio tower sites and 5 communications dispatch locations. The Wake County Public Safety Communication Systems team provides critical communication support for 911 dispatchers, fire/rescue, law enforcement, emergency medical responders, public works and general government personnel.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related field
  • Four years of experience in public safety systems design and administration
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Must be proficient in troubleshooting, repair, installation and customer training on Motorola Land Mobile Radio Products. This equipment includes Conventional, Trunking, Simulcast, Analog and Digital technologies
  • Must have a detailed understanding of Motorola systems permitting the individual to assist in the design, troubleshooting and maintenance of Motorola's various product lines
  • Must be able to verbalize and communicate concepts and recommendations to the customer and within other Motorola organizations
  • Must be able to coordinate projects in the field and successfully implement and complete these projects
  • Must have detailed understanding of networking including the OSI Model and understand how OSI Layer 2 and 3 networks apply to backhaul connectivity
  • Must have a thorough understanding of RSS/CPS software and how to program subscribers
  • Must have a thorough understanding of Network Management applications and how to configure devices in a P25 Zone Core
  • Must be able to Install, optimize and maintain new radio voice and data systems
  • Must be Motorola M3 Core Certified, or capable of certification within 1 year of employment

  • Knowledge and experience in radio communication systems, radio propagation, RF, wireless or broadband/LTE
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to cooperatively resolve end user issues quickly and accurately, while building relationships with internal personnel and external contacts
  • Critical thinking with excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to include the ability to reverse engineer configurations
  • Knowledge and understanding how data flows within applications, how configuration or changes within the system can affect processes and how to reconcile data and obtain information needed by business owners to make decisions
  • Knowledge of transmission, broadcasting, switching, control and operation of telecommunications systems
  • Knowledge of designing test strategies, test plans and accomplishing test execution to include user acceptance test driven development, execution and test monitoring
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as in a dynamic team environment and stay focus in a fast-paced environment
