The Wastewater Collections Technician A and Wastewater Collections Technician B positions require a CDL A and CDL B, respectively. Candidates that do not currently possess the appropriate level CDL A or a CDL B, in general, should not be discouraged from applying. The City of Kingman works closely with local partners to offer paid training.

Commercial Truck Driver Training (Paid Training)

Our local CDL program consists of four weeks of classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training with an experienced and highly qualified instructor. The cost of training may be covered in full by scholarship through AZ@Work or by the City of Kingman. We will assist you through the process each step of the way and you will get paid a $17.95* hourly wage while you train.

Six Months On-the-Job (Paid Training)

Once you graduate from the Driving Academy and with the appropriate class of license and any applicable endorsements, you will begin on-the job paid training during your 6-month introductory period.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance and repair of sewer collection systems. Performs operations according to required standards; and performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of the Assistant Public Works Director and/or Wastewater Collections Maintenance Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None generally. May supervise maintenance personnel.

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and 3 years qualifying experience, including 1 year of operational experience as a Grade III or IV certified wastewater collections operator; or
  • Two (2) years post-secondary education in a related technical field and 1 year of qualifying experience, including 1 year as a Grade III or IV certified wastewater collections operator; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in a qualifying discipline and 1-year experience as a certified Grade III wastewater collections operator.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid Arizona Driver's license or ability to obtain one within 6 (six) months of hire.
  • Class A CDL.
  • Arizona Certification as a Wastewater Collections Operator Grade III or IV.
  • May be required to obtain Confined Space Entry and/or Competent Person certification.

Wastewater Collections Technician B Requirements
  • Valid Arizona Driver's license or ability to obtain one within 6 (six) months of hire.
  • Class B CDL.
  • Arizona Certification as a Wastewater Collections Operator Grade I or ii.
  • May be required to obtain Confined Space Entry and/or Competent Person certification.


Essential Functions

  • Operates and maintains sewage lift stations; Cleans wet wells and operates pumps and valves to control and adjust flow.
  • Inspects collection lines for stoppages or damage, performs preventive maintenance on collection system equipment, unplugs, cleans and maintains lines, sets up traffic safety devices.
  • Hydraulically cleans collection lines with high pressure equipment. Uses CCTV equipment to inspect City collection system activities.
  • Checks and maintains manholes for corrosion and roaches. Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance, and collection system activities as set by Local, State and Federal Statutes.
  • Shall maintain collection system to meet CMOM compliance.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.


Miscellaneous

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in wastewater collection system maintenance and operation activities.
  • Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform process control calculations; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Motor vehicle, hydro machine, CCTV, generators, pumps, gauges, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, laptop computer and cell phone.
