What You'll Be Doing

The Solid Waste Management Division is all about recycling & waste! You’ll be surrounded by an environmentally conscious team that oversees management of the County’s recycling efforts and manages the County’s municipal solid waste landfill. This position will Direct the Landfill Team within the Solid Waste Division. Plans and administers various County programs and services relating to active and closed landfills. Work involves extensive knowledge of the solid waste field, state regulations as related to solid waste disposal and contract administration. Employee works under the direction of the Solid Waste Management Director, supervises Facility Managers and has daily contact with the public, requiring tact, courtesy and diplomacy. Oversees the active South Wake Landfill and East Wake Transfer Station as well as numerous closed landfills in post closure care. Oversees various landfill gas collection and control facilities on Wake County owned landfills. Works with the Wake County Communications and the Outreach/Education group within Solid Waste for promotion of managed facilities. Works with Recycling Operations group regarding appropriate recycling and disposal locations of waste from managed facilities.

NOTE: Work Schedule: Mon - Fri 8:30am - 5:15pm with opportunity to participate in a hybrid work model based on the needs of the organization.

*This position requires up to 50% field work and has paid scheduled on-call work (up to 1 week per month)*

About Our Team

The South Wake Landfill receives close to 2000 tons of Wake County only trash that’s delivered by private & municipal solid waste haulers and it’s considered to be a cutting-edge facility when it comes to managing waste and associated malodors - in fact we offer regular tours of the facilities of which have had over 2000 people take over the past 5 years. We also oversee the Convenience Centers (11), Multi-Material Recycling Facilities (3) and Household Hazardous Waste Facilities (3) scattered around Wake County.

The Solid Waste Team is part of the Environmental Services Department for Wake County. We are a relatively small team (17 full time positions) with a budget of over $30 M per year. This is primarily because our group are mostly contract managers. We procure and manage the contracts by with our various sites are operated. We have an active capital improvement program that is normally building 2-3 projects per year with assistance from the Facilities Design & Construction Department. Most of our staff has been with the division five + years, but the majority have been with us for ten or more; it is a great group to work with!

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Engineering or a related field
  • Five years of experience in solid waste management
  • Valid driver's license and a "safe" driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

  • SWANA MOLO (Manager of Landfill Operations)
  • Certification and/or Registration as a NC Professional Engineer


How Will We Know You're 'The One'?

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite (Word, Outlook, Access and/or Excel or related systems)
