Essential Functions:
  • Provides services in a specialized service area and may be assigned cases with a high degree of complexity and/or sensitivity and/or carry primary responsibility for a specific program function such as intake.
  • Prepares in-depth assessments in the formulation and delivery of service plans; analyzes information received and makes decisions regarding service plans and other case decisions subject to the CPS Supervisor’s final approval; maintains timely records and other reports; assists and supports clients in the prudent use of agency and other resources.
  • In support of the CPS Supervisor, provides supervisory coverage in supervisor’s absence; provides CPS policy and practice consultation to unit members; provides or coordinates new policy training; assists with onboarding and training of and mentoring to new CPS workers.
  • Performs work with ancillary agencies such as clinics, employment services, vocational rehabilitation services and the courts.
  • Supports and facilitates team process in the CPS unit and shares responsibility with other senior workers for Child Welfare Meeting planning and facilitation.
  • Demonstrates and follows the Albemarle County Pillars of High-Performance sharing leadership, ownership, and responsibility for the County’s vision, mission, core values, and strategic goals, and uses the Business Operating Principles as a guide for operating process and how the work is accomplished; participates in management team(s).
  • Promotes cultural understanding and competency and an organizational climate of equity and inclusion and provides every customer with an experience that is professional, empathetic, and responsive.
  • Provides coverage after hours and on weekends, on an on-call basis, for emergencies involving abuse or neglect of children and adolescents, and for situations requiring immediate attention regarding children in the legal custody of the Department of Social Services.

Required Education and Experience:
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or minimum of a bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area (Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia). Considerable experience in assigned program area and completion of required training programs or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Workers in this position are required to drive and they must meet the eligibility requirements of the County’s safe driver policy. Workers must be willing to travel occasionally overnight and may be required to assist in managing emergency shelters for the public. Must be willing to work beyond regular working hours and be on call. The candidate may be subject to criminal history and central registry background checks.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Possession of a BSW degree, MSW or related master’s degree and/or a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Work license are preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Administers work to the public typically in clients' home, often in remote rural areas.
  • Frequent contacts with clients and coordination with other public and private agencies (i.e., school, courts, clinics, etc.) are required.
  • Involves frequent driving, walking, and standing.
  • Involves telework for participating in virtual meetings and much of the office-based administrative work including documentation and data entry can be completed virtually.

Remote Work:

This position is not eligible for remote work. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Salary Range:

The hiring range for this position is $36.70 - $40.56 per hour (approx. $76,336 - $84,372 per year.) Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full time, FLSA exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, §P-60.
