DUTIES

ANNUAL SALARY

$91,057 to $113,148; $101,769 to $126,449; $96,277 to $140,731 and $104,608 to $152,966

Annual salary is at the start of the pay range. The current salary range is subject to change. Please confirm the starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer.
Candidates from the eligible list are normally appointed to vacancies in the lower pay grade positions.


A Fire Protection Engineering Associate performs professional engineering work in the application of engineering standards to problems of safeguarding life and property against loss from fire, explosions and related hazards; applies state and local regulations to guard against hazardous material and toxic chemical releases; conducts fire and life safety reviews of building plans and field inspections for new construction projects.

REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in engineering; or
Certification as an Engineer-In-Training recognized by the State of California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.


PROCESS NOTES

Applicants applying under Requirement No. 1 who are within six months of graduation from an accredited four-year college or university may apply. However, an appointment cannot be made until the educational requirements as described have been met.
Some positions may require a valid California driver’s license. Candidates may not be eligible for appointment to these positions if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI).
Applicants filing under Requirement No. 2 must list their Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification number in the Supplemental Questions Section of the on-line application at the time of filing. Applicants who fail to provide their EIT certification number will not be considered further in this examination.
Appointments will be made to temporary training positions in accordance with Section 5.30 of the Rules of the Board of Civil Service Commissioners for a maximum duration of three years. In order to successfully complete the temporary training period, new appointees must obtain their Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certificate within three years. New appointees who do not successfully complete the temporary training period will be terminated from the class.
Applicants who have received formal education, training or experience in fire protection engineering are especially desired.

The examination will consist entirely of an interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Reading Comprehension; Judgment and Decision Making; Initiative; Objectivity; Teamwork; Tact; Written Communication; Industry Knowledge, including knowledge of: the application of science and engineering principles, such as fluid dynamics and thermodynamics; fire protection engineering principles and practices, including the dynamics and characteristics of fire and its products of combustion; the design, installation, and use of manual and automatic fire extinguishing devices and systems; building construction for fire rated assemblies, such as fire walls and fire partitions; the design, installation, and maintenance of fire detection devices; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.

Prior to the interview applicants will be required to prepare some written material related to the duties and responsibilities of a Fire Protection Engineering Associate. This essay material will not be separately scored, but will be presented to the interview board for review and consideration, which may include discussion, in the overall evaluation of the candidate. Those who do not complete the advisory essay will not be invited to the interview and will be considered to have failed the entire examination. To be considered complete, the advisory essay must include a substantive response for each question or problem included in the advisory essay for which an applicant is required to provide an answer. Please note that applicants must complete the advisory essay and meet the minimum qualifications as stated on this bulletin in order to be considered further in the examination process.

The advisory essay will be administered on-line. Applicants invited to participate in the examination will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps needed to complete the on-line advisory essay. Applicants will be required to complete the on-line advisory essay between AUGUST 26, 2024 and SEPTEMBER 2, 2024. Applicants who fail to complete the advisory essay as instructed may be disqualified.

Candidates will be notified by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the interviews, which may be held in Los Angeles or on-line. It is anticipated that interviews will begin during the period of OCTOBER 7, 2024 to OCTOBER 18, 2024 .

In conjunction with Civil Service Rules, applicants who have received a regular appointment to a City position are current eligible City employees or are on a reserve list will be considered Promotional candidates while all other applicants will be considered Open candidates.
In accordance with Civil Service Rule, Sec. 4.24, review periods may be combined. Candidates in the examination process may file protests as provided in Sec. 4.20, 4.22 and 4.23 as applicable and within the required time frame; however, the Personnel Department may respond to and resolve protests prior to the establishment of the eligible list.
