Join #TeamWake as a Public Health Nurse for the School Health Program!

The Wake County Health and Human Services School Health Program provides School Health Services for 198 Wake County Public Schools. Each school nurses serves 2 schools which may be any combination of preschool, elementary, middle, and/or high schools. Nurses spend 2 days a week at one school and 3 days a week at the other school. School nurses work 8-hour days Monday through Friday and must be present in assigned schools during regular school hours.

This school nurse position is full-time and year-round (12 months.) This school nurse will serve 2 schools in the southwest region of Wake County, the Garner/Willow Springs area.

Responsibilities of the school nurse include:
  • Nursing assessment
  • Health care plan development and implementation
  • Training, delegation, and supervision of unlicensed assistive personnel
  • Consultation with school staff regarding student health issues
  • Case management/care coordination for students with chronic health conditions
  • Vision rescreening, referral, and follow-up
  • Attendance/participation in IEP/504 meetings for student’s with identified medical needs at school
  • Case finding students who may benefit from School Health Services
  • Collaboration with school staff, physicians, families, and community partners to identify and secure services for families and students

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing
  • No specific experience required
  • North Carolina Board of Nursing Licensed Registered Nurse
  • CPR
  • AED
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • 2 years or more of school health nursing, pediatric nursing, home health, or public health experience
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
  • Spanish language skills
  • Valid NC Driver’s License and reliable transportation
