Job Description

Since 1972, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety / Office of the State Fire Marshal has been the State of Missouri’s premier regulatory oversight and enforcement agency for Fire Investigations, Fire Inspections, Elevator and Amusement Ride Safety, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety, and Firefighter Training and Certification. The Division provides services to over 25,000 firefighters in Missouri, as well as to the 6.1 million residents and over 40 million visitors to the state, each year.

Job Description:

  • Applicant must live in or be willing to move to Northeast Missouri within 90 days of starting employment. Outside of this area will be considered on a case by case basis.
  • Work independently and under the supervision of the Compliance Inspection Manager, otherwise known as the Deputy Chief of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Unit.
  • Schedule and make regular periodic inspections for boiler and pressure vessels in an assigned geographic area as required by statute, rule, and regulation.
  • Make necessary engineering calculation and resulting recommendations to correct any unsafe conditions found.
  • Make reports of inspection on a computer web-based system describing conditions observed and recommendations, if any.
  • Under general supervision, perform accident investigations related to boilers and pressure vessels, and complete necessary reports.
  • Provides presentations as requested.


Minimum Qualifications:

An applicant for the position of Senior Safety Inspector of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Unit must have:

  • Five (5) years’ experience in the construction, installation, inspection, operation, maintenance, or repair of high pressure boilers and pressure vessels as a mechanical engineer, steam operating engineer, boilermaker, or boiler inspector; and,
  • Must be able to obtain Missouri Commission for boiler and pressure vessel within ninety (90) days of employment (provided by Division of Fire Safety - Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Unit).
  • Possession of National Board Commission preferred.


Lack of post-secondary education will not be used as the sole basis denying consideration to any applicant.

Additional Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Additional documented hours of training in the boiler/pressure vessel inspection field is preferable.
  • Excellent public relation skills.
  • Shall be of good moral character.
  • Shall not have been convicted of a felony or other crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Shall be a citizen of the United States.
  • Shall possess ordinary physical strength and be able to pass such physical and mental examinations as the State Fire Marshal may prescribe.
  • A Senior Safety Inspector for the Boiler/Pressure Vessel Safety Unit shall not hold any other commission or office, elective or appointive, or accept any other employment while an inspector, without prior approval.
  • A Senior Safety Inspector for the Boiler/Pressure Vessel Safety Unit shall not accept any compensation, reward, or gift, other than regular salary and expenses for the performance of official duties.
