Job Description

Job Description and Duties

Are you interested in joining a team of attorneys, paralegals, investigative auditors, and legal secretaries working on state and national cases involving Medicaid provider fraud in a state agency that investigates and prosecutes fraud committed at the expense of the State's Medicaid program (Medi-Cal)? Medi-Cal is a vitally important federal-state healthcare program that pays for healthcare for almost one-third of all Californians. If you are a motivated self-starter who enjoys working with others in a team environment, then the California Department of Justice, Division of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse (DMFEA) Sacramento office is looking for you!

This position involves civil case work on healthcare fraud cases, most of them brought under the California and Federal False Claims Acts. The Legal Secretary performs legal secretarial duties under the supervision of a Supervising Deputy Attorney General. Being a part of the DMFEA, a law enforcement unit concentrating on complex civil fraud cases within the Office of the Attorney General in Sacramento, is an opportunity for a Legal Secretary to work in a position offering considerable latitude for independent judgment and day-to-day self-executing job prioritization.

The Legal Secretary types, processes, stores, retrieves, edits, organizes, manages, files, and disposes of documents such as correspondence, evidence, pleadings, briefs, motions, and related legal documents using modern office methods and procedures as required, including databases; assures all documents are prepared, proofread, copied, and processed to meet all legal requirements and deadlines; prepares discovery, which includes, under the direction of the case attorney, the organization, indexing, numbering, copying, and delivery of discoverable case material and documents obtained in discovery; selects and prepares documents for motions, hearings, and trial; uses law library and computer database programs to check case citations and quoted matter, locates copies of jury instructions, statutes, and cases; calendars appointments, court appearances, and statutory appointments; helps lawyers prepare for appearances in court; enters and organizes data; obtains case information, including by accessing various databases; assists with overflow work and deadline filings, and acts as backup for receptionists and other secretarial stations as needed; makes travel arrangements; requests travel advances, and prepares travel expense claims; arranges conferences; corresponds and otherwise communicates with courts, lawyers, and others.
