THE POSITION : This is a multi-departmental classification for use in assigned divisions and/or sections. Under general supervision, performs semiskilled work in the operation of light and heavy equipment and complex equipment and performs other work as required.

Representative Duties

The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting. Essential Duties: Operates trucks, trailers, rear-loading trucks, skid-steer loaders, and other related equipment; Collects trash and debris from homeless encampment sites; Identifies and separate personal property from trash for safekeeping, with supervision. Minimum Qualifications

Applications will be accepted only for those applicants who clearly demonstrate on the completed City application and Supplemental Questionnaire that they have:
  • One (1) year experience in the operation of light and heavy maintenance equipment such as skid-steer, graders, dozers, backhoes, three and seven gang mowers, heavy dump trucks, towing trailers, front loaders with sand bucket and clamshell implements; OR
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described job duties
  • Possession of a valid California Class "A" driver's license is required.


OTHER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Knowledge of : Common tools, equipment, and materials used in the scope of the work; Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work. Ability to: Make minor repairs and adjustments and service equipment; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Lead a crew in the deliverables of daily tasks; Perform manual tasks.

Physical Conditions or Special Working conditions: Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and remove objects of moderate weight and force depending on job assignment; Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with exposure to unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions; May be required to work on a 24-hour rotational shift basis, including weekends, holidays, and declared emergencies; Will be on-call for emergencies after regular hours and must be willing to work overtime.

Examination (Weighted: 100%)

Oral Appraisal Interview (Weighted: 100%) July 11, 2024 (Tentative). The method of examination may include one or more of the following: written exam; oral exam; evaluation of education, training, experience, or other qualifications as shown by the application, or by other information submitted, or by the record; questionnaires submitted to references; or any other appropriate measure of fitness. A minimum passing score of 70% is required. **NOTE: Admission to the Examination may be limited to those applicants who clearly demonstrate on the completed City Application and Supplemental Questionnaire the best combination of qualifications related to the position. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of completed application and supplemental questionnaire.

VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
