The City of Tacoma Environmental Services Department is seeking a highly motivated Education and Outreach Liaison to coordinate our innovative Community Ambassador Program (CAP). Th e CAP provides recycling, waste reduction, and food recovery education to diverse communities and language groups.

This is a Project Position in the Director’s Office of the Environmental Services Department. The position serves the Climate Action and Resilience special project. This project position is funded for 3 years by the Environmental Protection A gency’s (EPA) Recycling Education and Outreach grant. The position reports to the C ommunications and E ngagement Team L ead and collaborates with the CAP support position.

The City is seeking an innovative CAP coordinator to provide innovative trainings on waste reduction, recycling, and food recovery in multiple language s to both multifamily and single-family residents. The trainings inspire ambassadors to use word-of-mouth as an effective educational tool. The program uses a train-the-trainer model in which some community members lead their own trainings of a dditional ambassado rs.

Under the direction of the Communication and Engagement T eam L ead, the CAP Coordinator will be responsible for managing the nationally award - winning Environmental Services CAP including working with partner community-based organizations , arranging trainings, and supporting ambassadors. This position will also work closely with partners and other members of the C ommunication and E ngagement T eam to organically grow the CAP . The CAP Coordinator develops a plan for the program to meet grant deliverables , collaborates with partners to organize trainings and summits, and modifies the curriculum as needed .

Essential Duties
  • Collaborate with program staff, partners, and trainers to organize and give trainings on recycling, food recovery, and waste reduction .
  • Plan ambassador trainings with partner organizations.
  • Create and modify ambassador program recycling and food recovery curriculum based on experience and audience.
  • Build capacity in community partners and groups to carry out trainings through a “train-the-trainer” model.
  • Develop and manage ambassador program annual plan.
  • Manage ambassador program newsletter and carry out an annual ambassador summit.
  • Promote the ambassador program, recycling, food recovery, and waste reduction at events and meetings.
  • Track program progress and attendance : Organize and gather program statistics and progress for reporting to the EPA .
  • Work with other members of the C ommunication and E ngagement T eam to identify opportunities to develop and improve language access and translation strategies .
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS*

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, education or directly related field

AND

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE*
Two (2) years of public engagement and/or education experience

*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Driver's License required at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.
