Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson, which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

Duties Description

The Trades Generalists at Shirley Chisholm State Park work as a part of the operations and maintenance staff. Trades Generalists across the various trades have one responsibility in common and that is to perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation and construction tasks in the mechanical, building, motor equipment and electrical trades. Incumbents must have a working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in their respective trades and be willing to learn new skills. Duties include but are not limited to:

• Lead crews of other trade generalists or unskilled staff in preventative and corrective maintenance of the park’s fleet of equipment including gators, push mowers, tractors, trucks, passenger vehicles and trail repair equipment.
• Supervise assigned subordinate staff.
• Complete repairs on various pieces of heavy equipment and small-engine devices.
• Plan and lay out projects, train others as well as read and interpret plans.
• May direct facility maintenance, leading operations in the absence of higher-level staff.

OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• The schedule is 40 hours per week, with pass days to be determined. Weekend, evening, and holiday shifts may also be required.
• Must be able to read and interpret blueprints
• Must be able to supervise others and to act independently with a minimum of supervision.
• Must have ability to understand and carry out written and/or verbal instructions.
• Must have knowledge of standard safety practices.
• Candidate is expected to periodically support the New York City Region’s park and operational needs, including special assignments at other parks and emergency management tasks as needed.

DOWNSTATE ADJUSTMENT: $3,400
