This position was established to coordinate division activities between and among the offices of Quality Schools, Educator Quality, Special Education, College and Career Readiness, and Adult Learning and Rehabilitation Services. The Deputy Commissioner is responsible for directing systemic school improvement efforts through these offices.

  • Coordinates key day-to-day management of projects and departmental activities in the Division of Learning Services.
  • Works to ensure collaboration across all levels of the organization.
  • Supervises and evaluates Executive Leadership Team members in the Division of Learning Services.
  • Serves as a trusted advisor to the Commissioner regarding the implementation and effectiveness of policies and recommends changes where improvements are needed.
  • Works closely with the Deputy for Financial and Administrative Services to ensure efficient and effective department operations.
  • Assists in planning and making recommendations to the Commissioner concerning improvements in all phases of the department’s educational programs.
  • Serves as the administrative liaison with the U.S. Office of Education.
  • Responsible for the overall state and federal school improvement processes and mandates.
  • Represents the department, as necessary, at legislative and other stakeholder meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Commissioner.
  • Assists the State Board of Education and the Commissioner with communication services as needed.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with representatives of media and other stakeholder organizations to ensure the effective dissemination and collection of information.
  • Keeps up-to-date on education and communication issues and trends.
  • Maintains familiarity with policy and legislative processes and school laws.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.
  • Thorough knowledge of the operational programs of the department and public schools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly and accurately understand complex data and present analysis.
  • Ability to translate complex analysis in easy-to-understand manner and present to a broad audience.
  • High levels of cultural proficiency and self-awareness with the ability to build relationships and maintain strong community collaborations within and across diverse communities.
  • Understanding and knowledge of both the formal and informal legislative process and those activities associated with this process.
  • Ability to manage daily administrative tasks without losing sight of long-term goals and planning.
  • Ability to drive change in the organization.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in educational administration, curriculum and instruction, or other related field.
  • Successful and responsible administrative, professional experience in the field of educational administration and/or state education department administration, or other related experience.
  • Other qualifications and experience which, in the opinion of the Commissioner of Education, meet the requirements of the position may be accepted in lieu of the above.
