Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Non-competitive: four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

Duties Description

Under the direction of the Park Managers and Park Supervisors, the Trades Generalist will be responsible for a primary trade in one of the following: carpentry; plumbing; electric; motor equipment; small engine repair or masonry. Trades Generalists across the various trades have one responsibility in common and that is performing a variety of skilled and semiskilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in the mechanical, building, motor equipment and electrical trades. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Perform medium to heavy manual labor and the ability to operate and maintain a variety of equipment.
• Perform repairs and maintenance at Saratoga Spa State Park and other satellite facilities as requested.
• Maintain DOH requirements for water systems, turn the water on and off at buildings, identify leaks, winterize buildings, and start up, operate, and maintain drinking water systems.
• Perform multiple tasks and projects associated with the maintenance of parks, grounds, and infrastructure. Incumbents must have a working knowledge of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in their respective trade.
• Will plan and lay out projects, supervise and train others as well as read and interpret plans.
• Directing facility maintenance and supervising lower-level staff.
• Assist in other areas of site operations as directed, which may include emergency situations.
• Provides excellent customer service to park visitors by answering questions and addressing their concerns promptly and courteously.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Additional Comments

OPERATIONAL NEED:
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class D driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess or obtain necessary safety training programs within the probationary period (subject to offerings).
• Must be able to follow written direction, record and document required information, and communicate effectively.
• Must comprehend and understand safety and code regulations on all aspects of operation.
• Must be able to work both independently and as a team.
• Must be familiar with the safe use of supplies, tools and equipment related to general construction.
• Must have the physical ability to perform heavy lifting.
• Must be capable of basic computer operation, such as accessing email, sending email, and attaching pictures or scans.
• The schedule is 40 hours per week, with pass days to be determined. Weekend, evening, and holiday shifts may also be required.
• Must be willing to keep up on all mandated safety training, including First Aid/CPR/AED
• Be able to attend Game of Logging (GOL) chainsaw certification course or approved equivalent course and maintain ability to conduct logging operations as a term and condition of employment.

*Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
