Job Description

Distinguishing Features of the Class

The Parks and Recreation Department has TWO opportunities for you to join our team as a Recreation Leader.

The first position is with our exciting new Mobile Recreation Program where you will bring the fun directly to Des Moines neighborhoods! You'll have an opportunity to set up fun activities, engage with residents, and make a positive impact on the community--all while having a blast!

The second position is with our Summer Camp Program supervising youth in the community through games, arts and crafts, and sports.

Assignment Location: Mobile Recreation Program or Summer Camp.

Approximate employment duration : Up to 40 hours per week June through September including weekends and holidays. The listed pay rate begins with the 2024 summer season.

Acceptable Experience and Training

Must be 16 years of age.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid when work assignment requires.
  • Requires satisfactory criminal, sex offender and if applicable driving record background checks.


Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Organizes, plans and leads a. wide variety of recreation activities such as day camps, youth programs summer playground programs, arts and crafts, sports, games and special events supervising participants in these activities.
  • Maintains discipline and observes necessary precautions to ensure safety of activity and program participants.
  • Warns community center patrons against hazardous practices and instructs them on facility rules.
  • Issues and monitors use of recreation supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains attendance and activity records and creates and updates regular reports.
  • Collects admission and class registration fees and writes receipts.
  • May drive a vehicle for transportation of program/activity participants and performs related work as required.
