Job Description

Position Summary:

Performs a variety of grounds and equipment maintenance at the South Canyon Landfill. Works directly under the supervision of the Crew Leader or Landfill Manager. Must be able to operate machinery and vehicles as required in the daily operation of the landfill specific to established solid waste landfilling practices and proper maintenance of equipment.

Essential Functions:

  • The schedule for this position is Wednesday through Saturday. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are ten-hour shifts and Saturday is a six-hour shift (8 am to 2 pm).
  • Assists with manual labor and basic equipment maintenance, including scale maintenance.
  • Wednesday and Thursday this position works under the Crew Leader performing Landfill Operations tasks; Friday and Saturday this position runs the scale and cash register.
  • Fills in at the Recycle Center if needed, may have opportunities for more hours when the Recycle Tech is away.
  • May on occasion use City vehicle to make pickups in town or deliver the daily deposits to the Finance Department at City Hall.
  • Inspects loads at the working face of the landfill to ensure there are no illegal items being dumped. Hauls pressure washer water to the landfill from town.
  • Performs snow removal from the various shops and office areas, and haul roads.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Operates heavy equipment for the facility construction projects as well as, manage waste at the working face including pushing, separating, spreading, compacting and covering of trash, landfill road construction, leachate management, snow removal.
  • Monitors the working area for hazardous materials when compacting trash, directs traffic at the working face during daily business and relays load type information to the scale attendant by 2-way radio.
  • Clean service and make minor repairs to assigned equipment including complete walk around inspection, checking leaks, broken parts and correct fluid levels, reports equipment problems to Crew Leader or Landfill Manger.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities regarding landfill and compost operations and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Maintain communication with the landfill Crew Leader or Landfill Manager as needed.
  • Maintain storm water control best management practices to include but not limited to ditches, culverts, outfalls, sediment basins, etc.
  • May be required to assist in measuring and logging compost pile temperatures.

Education, Training & Certifications:

Necessary:

  • Ability to use email, basic computer applications, operate a Point-of-Sale (POS) system, basic customer service, and giving correct change.
  • Class R Colorado Driver’s license, satisfactory motor vehicle record.
  • Participate in Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) “Waste Screening at MSWFacilities” training within first year of employment.
  • Participate in all Colorado Department of Health and Environment mandated onsite training each year.


Skills Test:

  • Incumbent/applicant may be required to perform an equipment skills test before an offer of employment is made.
