As a General Building Inspector
Starting pay based on experience and certifications ranging from $21.33/hr. to $36.27/hr.
Two years’ experience in the construction Industry.
Note: If you hold a 4-year degree in an architectural, engineering or construction-related field you can qualify for a probationary level II certificate.

As a Senior Building Inspector
Starting pay based on experience and certifications ranging from $25.81/hr. to $43.89/hr.
Must hold a Standard Level III Building Inspections certificate
Five years of experience in the construction industry

What does a typical day look like?
  • You will spend most of your time in the field with limited supervision
  • Assist customers by reviewing construction plans to verify compliance with the North Carolina Technical Codes and Wake County ordinances
  • Answer questions related to building codes, and Wake County procedures, policies and development ordinances
  • Troubleshoot site development issues and collaborate in pre-submittal meetings
  • Regular communication with architects, engineers and designers to eliminate possible code violations
  • Work directly with homeowners to help them understand the various requirements


About Our Team

Wake County Permitting and Inspections is a core service of the Planning, Development & Inspections Division of the Community Services Department. This State mandated service provides building inspections and permitting services for all unincorporated areas of Wake County and the Wake County Public School System. Additionally, the County team is under contract with the towns of Knightdale, Rolesville, Wendell and Zebulon to provide these services to their jurisdictions.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience in the construction industry
  • Standard Level II Code Official Certification required in Building trades within 4 years of hire.
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Previous inspection and/or construction experience
  • Preferred qualifications for Senior Inspector - Level III
  • Preferred qualifications for General Inspector - Level II

  • General knowledge of residential and commercial construction practices
  • Technical knowledge of the building construction trade
