A Zoo Curator of Birds is responsible for the health and welfare of the entire collection of birds at the Los Angeles Zoo; determines exhibition requirements including food, shelter, special environmental requirements, and care; advises on all transactions concerning the sale or purchase of birds; determines breeding requirements; assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of subordinate animal keeping personnel responsible for the routine care of the bird collection; applies sound supervisory standards and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work group; and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.

A Zoo Curator of Birds may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in zoology, biology or a closely related field; and a. Three years of full-time paid professional zoo experience as an assistant or associate curator, curator, assistant zoo director, or zoo director; or
b. Three years of full-time paid experience as a Senior Animal Keeper with the City of Los Angeles specializing in the exhibition, care, selection, or identification of exotic birds.

PROCESS NOTES
One additional year of full-time paid experience at the level of Senior Animal Keeper with the City of Los Angeles in supervising the care, selection, or identification of exotic and wild animals may be substituted for each year of education required.Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.Some positions may require a valid California driver’s license. Candidates may not be eligible for appointment to these positions if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI).Applicants qualifying under Requirement #1 must list their school name and location, type of degree earned and major in the Education section of the City application. Applicants who fail to provide this information on their application will not be considered further in this examination and their applications will not be processed.For qualifying work experience gained outside of the City of Los Angeles, the term “professional experience” applies to positions that require possession of a degree from an accredited four-year college or university in order to obtain that position. Therefore, to be considered “professional,” non-City qualifying experience must be gained in positions after obtaining a four-year degree.Please note that qualifying education must be from a college or university accredited by a City of Los Angeles recognized agency. To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process in the following order: 1) Los Angeles City promotional applicants who meet the minimum requirements. You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to apply for this examination as a promotional candidate; 2) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles on a part-time or exempt basis who meet the minimum requirements; 3) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applications submitted during the filing period may be kept on file in the event that additional applicants need to be tested to meet hiring needs.

SELECTION PROCESS

Interview: 100%

The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Stress Tolerance; Supervision; Results Orientation; Teamwork; Shares Knowledge and Information; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: proper and safe methods and equipment used to move and handle animals; protocols for responding to emergencies at a zoo; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: principles of zoology and animal well-being as related to birds; operant conditioning techniques used on animals to modify and/or encourage desired behavior; federal, state, and local regulations related to the husbandry, well-being, purchase, sale, loan, donation, shipment, and/or quarantine of wildlife; methods used to maintain the proper condition of zoo buildings, equipment, habitats, grounds, and surrounding vegetation; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
