LIBRARY DEPARTMENT

Our Early Childhood Literacy Specialist is a vital member of both the Cameron Park Library and our Community Hub team. Community Hubs are collaborative efforts located within our Library branches and staffed by a team specializing in family engagement, early literacy, and community health that are focused on children, families, and individuals across the lifespan. Each Community Hub team is dedicated to building resilient communities by helping individuals including seniors, veterans, families, and caregivers gain access to needed resources, including informal community supports and formal services.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Perform complex early childhood literacy paraprofessional duties, for the County's Early Literacy Program, provide direct instruction to children and adults in the area of early childhood literacy, develop programs with the program scope; plan, manages, administers, implements, and evaluates the County Early Literacy Program.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to:
  • Plan and present early literacy programs and activities for children ages 0-5 and their families, including various Storytime's, and other educational programs at designated sites.
  • Work to build personal relationships with families, creating environments in which families can socialize; connects patrons to additional services.
  • Select and distribute books and other literacy materials, as needed, to families in the literacy program.
  • Register participants for programs and inputs information into a database.
  • Design and implement age-appropriate arts and crafts activities to develop motor skills.
  • Design and distribute promotional and media material to promote the County's Early Literacy Program through various media.
  • Develop early literacy programming such as storytimes and implement already-developed programs such as Mother Goose on the Loose and 2s & 3s on the go.
  • Research and order essential items for programming, including books and early literacy educational materials.
  • Conduct basic needs assessments for individuals and/or families'.
  • Connect individuals and/or families to resources either through direct delivery of goods and services and/or referral to outside agencies.
  • Attend collaborative meetings with partner agencies such as El Dorado County Office of Education, First 5 El Dorado, Health and Human Services Departments, Housing El Dorado, etc.
  • Maintain program participant and client records.
  • Participate in outreach events such as resource distributions, pop-up events, Kids Expo, etc.
  • Assist with school field trips.
  • Assist patrons with typical library functions such as registering for a library card, checking in/out materials, placing holds, locating requested materials, etc.
  • Monitor kid's areas of the library and interact with families in order to build community trust and engage families in library and Hub services.
  • Facilitate community advisory groups to identify community needs.
  • Develop a working knowledge of what resources are available to individuals and families within our community.
  • Develop early literacy programming such as story times and implement already-developed programs such as Mother Goose on the Loose and 2s & 3s on the Go

The Early Childhood Literacy Specialist works as an integral part of the Cameron Park Library’s children’s department as well as part of the Community Hub’s collaborative team to connect families to essential resources. The ideal candidate will be able to deliver high-energy, engaging, and educational programming for families. They will be excited to participate in outreach opportunities that may occur on evenings and weekends to connect with working families. They will be familiar with trauma-informed care and ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) (cdc.gov)). The ideal candidate will be able to work with diverse members of the community who may be experiencing trauma and/or facing possible food, job, or housing insecurities without judgement and with dignity, respect, and empathy.

Human Resources will assess your application to determine if you are minimally qualified using the following recommendations:

Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by college-level coursework in early childhood education, early childhood literacy, library science, child development, or a related field,

AND

One (1) year of paraprofessional experience at a level equivalent to the County's class of Library Assistant II,

OR

one (1) year of experience planning, developing, and implementing preschool or other early literacy programs and early education curriculum.

Possession of an associate degree or higher in the areas of early childhood education, early childhood literacy, library science, child development, or a related field is desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record.
