CREW LEADER-LANDSCAPE & SUSTAINABILITY

Department: Public Works

Pay Grade: 108

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Personnel Status: Regular Full-Time

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the work of a crew of personnel engaged in landscape maintenance and sustainability of the City’s land. This position reports to the Landscape and Sustainability Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs all aspects of landscape maintenance, installation, and beautification duties.
  • Performs equipment transport and operation.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment in clean, safe, and functioning condition.
  • Provides traffic control and flagging necessary to maintain safe and functional jobsites.
  • Exercises direct supervision over assigned personnel.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent; one (1) to three (3) years’ experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of current applicable federal and state policies, mandates, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the methods, principles, techniques, equipment, tools, and practices of landscape maintenance.
  • Knowledge of horticulture, arboricultural, and gardening methods, principles, techniques, equipment, tools, and practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety regulations, protocols, principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance techniques as related to division equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the geography and road system of the City.
  • Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
  • Skill in the training and supervision of personnel.
  • Skill in operating a variety of equipment and tools related to landscape maintenance and construction activities.
  • Skill in the application of pesticides and herbicides.
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy work, which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, climbing, crouching, bending, or walking. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring manual dexterity, utilizes sense of smell, and distinguishes between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in various outdoor environments. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
