Join Tacoma Power as a Fish Facility Technician (Classification: Natural Resources Field Technician) at our Hoodsport, WA office and experience the thrill of bridging the gap between nature and information. As a vital member of our team, you'll p rovide support for natural resources management requirements associated with operation of Tacoma Power’s Cushman Hydroelectric Projects . Your contributions will directly impact the preservation and sustainable management of Tacoma Power’s invaluable resources.

Tacoma Power is accepting applications for a Natural Resources Technician I to perform?day-to-day duties and tasks associated with the operation of an upstream adult fish collector at Cushman No. 2 Dam, a downstream juvenile fish collector at Cushman No. 1 Dam, and two fish hatcheries in the North Fork Skokomish.?This is a permanent, non-represented, full-time position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Daily care of juvenile salmonids in modern hatchery facilities
  • Operation of downstream passage facilities.
  • Operation of upstream passage facilities.
  • Transportation of live fish of all life stages.
  • Fish passage study implementation.
  • Riverine habitat survey work.


This position requires field work, often during adverse weather conditions, while operating 4-wheel drive pick-ups, off-road vehicles, and boats; walking and cross-country hiking over rugged terrain; performing arduous duties such as heavy lifting, using various hand tools and operating power equipment; and collecting data using various methods of measurement and documentation.

This position also requires working indoors using various computer programs, attending meetings, coordinating daily routines with other work groups, and periodic positive interactions with the public.

Qualifications

Minimum Education*
High School Diploma or GED with coursework in biology or environmental science
Minimum Experience*
2 years

*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

Desired Experience:

  • E xperience with MS Office Suite , SharePoint, SQL, Tableau (or other data visualization tools), and Snowflake
  • Facility operation experience


Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
First Aid and CPR certification within the first 6 months of employment
Washington State Driver's License

Knowledge & Skills

  • Sound judgment in carrying out job duties.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Ability to plan and conduct work with minimum supervision.
  • Driving on forest roads in adverse weather conditions.
  • Operating powered boats.
  • Operating power tools
  • Ability to accurately collect, record, and manage field data.
  • Knowledge of current techniques of raising pacific salmon in modern fish facilities
  • Juvenile and adult fish identification
