GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This position will assist with maintaining trails, contributing to other park maintenance needs and visitor orientations in a unique environment with sensitive natural and cultural resources.

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs entry-level building maintenance and construction work and is responsible for assisting in the operation of Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site. Duties include but are not limited to: trail maintenance and erosion control projects, landscaping, groundskeeping, cleaning, maintenance and repairs to facilities, buildings, equipment, vehicles and grounds. Operates various types of equipment to include mowers, trimmers, power tools, vehicles and other equipment as needed. Performs general visitor assistance including visitor orientation briefing and providing of information on park rules and regulations. Assists with agency and site programs to include safety and natural and cultural resource protection. Prepares required reports. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of independent judgment. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and branch rules, regulations and procedures.

NOTE: Temporary position contingent upon funding with fluctuating full-time/part-time hours based on operational needs.


Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Completion of 8th grade.

Experience:

Experience in facility, equipment, trail and/or grounds maintenance.

NOTE: Volunteer or personal experience in facility, equipment or grounds maintenance counts towards the required experience.

Licensure:

As driving is required, applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience:

One year experience building maintenance;

One year experience groundskeeping.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of general facility, building and grounds repair and cleaning techniques;

Knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance techniques;

Knowledge of basic mathematics;

Knowledge of general custodial duties;

Knowledge of general plumbing techniques;

Knowledge of basic carpentry techniques;

Knowledge of basic electrical techniques;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, tractors, chainsaws, vehicles, generators, and other mechanical equipment;

Skill in making independent and timely decisions;

Skill in using a standard office equipment and personal computer;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

Skill in providing quality customer serivce in a courteous and professional manner;

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program;

Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple and changing priorities;

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Position contingent upon funding;

This position may fluctuate between part-time and full-time status throughout the term of employment. Changing from part-time to full-time and vice-versa may impact the amount of leave accrued and health insurance rates;

Required to work 10 to 40 hours per week with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Hours may be reduced or extended as needed;

Required to adjust to changing schedules;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stay;

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

Must confirm to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
