CalOptima Health is seeking a highly motivated an experienced Occupational Therapist (OT) to join our team. The Occupational Therapist will evaluate and reassess participants upon referral from the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT). The incumbent will provide and recommend therapeutic exercises. The incumbent will provide comprehensive occupational therapy programs for Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) participants, including development and oversight of functional maintenance programs.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • 80% - Program Support
    • Participates in a mission-driven culture of high-quality performance, with a member focus on customer service, consistency, dignity and accountability.
    • Assessment:
      • Collects participant data and completes required forms with appropriate responses according to department and industry standards.
      • Identifies participant's overt problems/needs, sets priorities and addresses those requiring further referral and/or follow-up.
      • Observes and records latest diagnostic results.
    • Planning Care:
      • Develops a plan of care based on occupational therapy needs/goals which incorporates the plans of other disciplines and continuing care needs.
      • Includes the participant/family in developing or revising the plan of care and makes referrals to interdisciplinary support services.
      • Establishes realistic and measurable goals and sets up treatment plans to administer rehabilitation treatment.
      • Performs initial, annual and periodic assessments as needed and as required by the IDT.
    • Implementing/Managing Care:
      • Ensures that therapy being provided conforms to accepted industry practice standards and organizational/department standards.
      • Provides correct treatments/procedures and other care as prescribed and according to participant care standards.
      • Explains occupational therapy treatment and procedures in appropriate way.
      • Provides participant and family education in rehabilitation needs and interventions.
      • Works with other therapists and primary care staff to provide participant care and to implement physician orders.
      • Documents all occupational therapy treatment and interventions as required by PACE guidelines.
      • Plans and develops maintenance exercise and therapy programs for participants.
      • Plans and implements home-based interventions, including installation of adaptable equipment for participant safety.
    • Participant/Family Education:
      • Assists and works with the IDT on delivery of care to provide training and education to family members, caregivers and PACE staff members for proper carryover of treatment interventions.
      • Makes home visits as necessary for home-based interventions and observation.
    • Evaluation:
      • Records participant care delivered as planned and any variations, with appropriate rationale.
      • Makes and records observations, as well as implements rehabilitation measures related to impending or associated problems.
    • Leadership:
      • Provides supervision to other staff who are implementing occupational therapy treatment and/or maintenance programs.
      • Identifies clinically appropriate treatment interventions and addresses cost-effectiveness as needed.
      • Recognizes unit problems and takes responsibility for documentation.
      • Participates in quality improvement (QI) processes.
      • Complies with policies addressing safe working conditions; monitors unsafe working conditions and recognizes inappropriate and/or ineffective participant care management; resolves issues/problems and completes written reports.
    • Interdisciplinary Team:
      • Participates as an active and cooperative member of the IDT.

  • 15% - Administrative Support
    • Assists the team in carrying out department responsibilities and collaborates with others to support short- and long-term goals/priorities for the department.
    • Keeps inventory of issued equipment.
    • Attends staff meetings and takes part in participant care planning.

  • 5% - Completes other projects and duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy required.
  • 1 year of clinical experience working with the frail or elderly population as an Occupational Therapist is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position such as those listed above may also be qualifying.
  • Have access to means of transportation for work away from the primary office approximately 10% of the time to provide continuum of care.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a related field.

Required Licensure / Certifications:
  • Valid and current California Occupational Therapy License in good standing is required.
  • CPR and First-Aid Certification required or must be obtained within six (6) months of date of hire.

  • Develop rapport and establish and maintain effective working relationships with CalOptima Health's leadership and staff and external contacts at all levels and with diverse backgrounds.
  • Work independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Motivate and lead multi-program teams and external committees/coalitions.
  • Utilize computer and appropriate software (e.g., Microsoft Office: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and job specific applications/systems to produce correspondence, charts, spreadsheets, and/or other information applicable to the position assignment.

  • Ability to visually read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
  • Ability to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
  • Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
  • Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
  • Lifting and moving objects, patients and/or equipment more than 50 pounds

Work Environment:

If located at the 500, 505 Building or a remote work location:
  • Work is typically indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours, with travel as needed.
  • There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.

If located at PACE:
  • Work is typically indoors in a clinical setting serving the frail and elderly.
  • There may be harmful or hazardous environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate to loud.

If located in the Community:
  • Work is typically indoors and sedentary and is subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours, with travel as needed.
  • Employee will occasionally work outdoors in varied temperatures.
  • There may be harmful or hazardous environmental conditions present for this job.
  • The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate to loud.
