What You'll Be Doing

(This is a new position anticipated in the County's new fiscal year 2025 budget, effective July 1, 2024)

This position is 95%-98% remote.

The Classification, Compensation & Salary Administration unit of Wake County Human Resources is seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and knowledgeable Compensation Consultant to provide comprehensive classification, compensation, and salary administration services for assigned County departments.

Work with leadership at assigned departments on:
- Position/organizational design
- Classification consultation
- Market pricing and structure placement
- Problem solving and solution development
- Evaluating candidate qualifications and internal equity and making salary recommendations to attract and retain staff
- Special projects associated with classification and compensation

Work with a team of Consultants to recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of compensation practices. This role involves high level communication with stakeholders regarding classification, compensation and salary administration recommendations. Use published or conduct ad hoc surveys to obtain and analyze market pay rates. Respond to external market data requests.

For positions with a remote work option, all Wake County Government remote workers must reside in one of the following states: North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, or Virginia.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, Public Administration, Business Administration or related field
  • Three years of experience in human resources administration
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Experience in public sector human resources
  • WorldatWork Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) or some courses completed towards CCP
  • Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources


How Will We Know You're 'The One'?

  • Working knowledge of labor market survey analysis/market pricing, job evaluation process and salary administration
  • Strong mathematical, analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and ability to manipulate large sets of data to analyze and make sound recommendations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of federal, state or local government classification and compensation methodologies

Hiring Range: $66,270 - $89,467

Market Range: $66,270 - $112,663
