DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION The County of El Dorado , Department of Transportation is responsible for funding, designing, building, operating, and maintaining the County Road System. El Dorado County's Road System currently consists of approximately 1083 centerline miles of paved roadway, 76 bridges, a multitude of storm drainage systems, and related transportation facilities.

Engineering Aide i s the entry and first working level for technical and paraprofessional engineering office and field support work. Initially, incumbents work under relatively close supervision performing the more routine work in one or more areas of office engineering, field engineering, surveying, materials testing or permit support work. The class is flexibly staffed to the Engineering Technician level and incumbents may advance to the next higher level after demonstrating substantive knowledge and proficiency in an assigned work area and upon meeting the minimum education and experience requirements for that level.

Engineering Technician is the experienced and skilled working level for technical and paraprofessional engineering office and field support work. Incumbents can work independently in performing a wide range of work in one or more areas of office engineering, field engineering, surveying, design, inspection, materials testing or permit support work.

Examples of Duties (Illustrative Only)
  • Performs a variety of basic technical engineering support work in the design and construction of public works, roads, bridges, drainage, capital improvements projects, and related areas.
  • Performs the preparation and review of plans, profiles, and other designs for a variety of public works projects form engineer's instructions and notes.
  • Prepares graphic displays, organization charts, and similar materials.
  • Prepares and maintains master files of drawings, maps, and specifications, researching and updating information as needed.
  • Assists with and prepares estimates and specifications.
  • Assists with and performs construction inspection and project administration on projects, including estimates, payroll monitoring, construction oversight, and related assignments.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable plans, specifications and standards.
  • Performs field and office work related to property and right-of-way boundaries, including the research of records and files and the preparation of property descriptions and maps.
  • Performs the checking of survey, parcel, and final maps for compliance with applicable laws, ordinances, and established survey practices.
  • Performs drafting and mapping assignments using manual or computer aided methods.
  • Participates as a member of a survey crew, performing calculations and rod, chain, and instrument work.
  • Performs the review, processing, and issues of encroachment, non-legal load transportation, house moving, parade, and other permits.
  • Performs basic traffic engineering and erosion control studies, including data analysis and preparation of road construction and improvement recommendations.
  • Performs the sampling and testing of construction materials and soils, both in the laboratory and in the field.
  • Provides information to the public, contractors, engineers, developers, and representatives of other government agencies, within the limits of knowledge and experience with the organization.
  • Assist with the preparations and maintenance of accurate records, correspondence, technical or narrative reports.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal Extra Help Engineering Aide/Engineering Technician will be a critical thinker with a coachable attitude. Ideally, this candidate is a college student with coursework in environmental science, engineering, or mathematics. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in learning and supporting experienced engineers in material sampling and analysis for various construction of public works, roads, bridges, drainage, and capital improvement projects. The ideal candidate should have a foundational understanding of mathematics, as well as safe driving skills for transporting materials and samples. They will bring their expertise to support a dynamic team, assisting with all aspects of the soil testing laboratory.

Where college degrees and/or college course credits are required, degrees and college units must be obtained from a regionally accredited college or university. Courses from non-regionally accredited institutions will not be evaluated for this requirement.

Engineering Aide:
Education:
Classes at the college preparatory level in advanced algebra.

One (1) year of experience at a level equivalent to the County's class of Development Technician II may be substituted for required course work.

Course work in geometry and trigonometry is desirable.

Engineering Technician:
Experience:

Three (3) years of engineering or technical support work at level equivalent to the County Engineering Aide classification.

College level course work in geometry, trigonometry and algebra may substitute for one year of the required experience.
Two years of college course work or the equivalent to possession of an Associate of Arts/Science degree in a pre-engineering or closely related curriculum may substitute for two years of the required experience.

Other Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver's license.
Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
Must be willing to work overtime and off hour shifts in emergency situations.
Some positions require lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to sixty (60) pounds.

This recruitment will establish a list for the purpose of filling current and future full time, part time, limited term and extra help vacancies for at least three (3) months. In accordance with Personnel Rules 1103.1 and 1105.1, an extra help or limited term employee may be transitioned into a regular employee if the department in which the employee works has a vacant allocated position for the same classification as held by the extra help or limited term employee and the appointing authority requests such transfer.
