Minimum Qualifications
Master Electrician:

Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus five (5) years of experience in repair, testing, maintenance, or installation of electrical systems or equipment.


Licenses or Certifications:
  • Master Electrician License issued by the State of Texas.

This position requires a Master Electrician License.

Staff hired at the Master Electrician level will be more heavily involved in managing contracts and overseeing contractor performance, running service calls, cleaning up electrical panels, and managing utility-wide electrical projects. They will be working with both energized and non-energized equipment.

Travel:
  • If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program , you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

Pay Range
$31.81 - $39.76
Hours
Monday - Friday;
7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Work hours may vary as determined by business need.

Position is considered essential and may require work on weekends, holidays, overtime, and call back for emergency response.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


Pulls wire, conduit, cable, etc. Connects power cables to equipment - i.e. generators, alarm systems, lighting systems, etc. Uses various electrician hand tools - i.e. snips, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, etc. Operates soldering tools. Reads profiles and blueprints. Measures, cuts, and bends wire and conduit using rulers and hand tools. Installs wire, conduit, coaxial cable, etc. Installs conductors. Splices electrical wiring (i.e. strip insulation), twists wires together, solders, tapes, applies terminal caps, etc. Operates various power saws (i.e. radial arm, skill, etc.), drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, electronic testing equipment, cable finding equipment, and equipment testers. Assists other trades with electrical problems.

Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluations, training, and guidance to others.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of the City and National Electric Code.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of building codes applicable to level of construction.
  • Knowledge of equipment tools and materials used in electrical maintenance and construction.
  • Knowledge of City permitting process.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools common to the electrical trade.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees, tenants, and the general public.
