The Marin County Sheriff’s Office: The Marin County Sheriff's Office is committed to partnering with our communities to provide leadership and excellence in public safety. We take pride in our department and work hard to provide a safe environment for our residents. The department is divided into three major bureaus; Administrative and Support Services, Detention Services, and Field Services in addition to operating the countywide Major Crime Task Force. The responsibilities of the Sheriff's Office Bureaus include providing general law enforcement services in the unincorporated communities of Marin County, maintaining the county jail, providing security to the Superior Court, operating a countywide communications division, performing death investigations under the purview of the Coroner, operating a documentary services division consisting of records, warrants, civil units, and more. The Marin County Jail is located on the Civic Center grounds in San Rafael. The jail provides housing and care for an average population of over 300 inmates, both men and women, who have been booked for a violation of law or sentenced to serve a jail term. In addition, individuals en route to another jail or prison may be temporarily held in the County Jail.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Our cooks prepare meals with purpose. Not only do they perform all kitchen and food prep duties, but they also provide valuable life skills and job training to Marin County Jail inmates. Under general supervision, the incumbent in this position will prepare, cook and serve food in the Marin County Jail; clean equipment and maintain health and safety regulations in the kitchen facilities; and direct kitchen inmate workers in food preparation service and cleanup activities. The current position requires work on assigned shifts including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

ABOUT YOU

The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of the procedures and equipment required to prepare and serve a high volume of meals in an institutional setting and of the necessary safety and sanitation procedures related to the preparation and storage of food in a high volume setting. In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience following menus and recipes and coordinating food preparation to ensure that food is ready at established times. The ideal candidate must also have the ability to supervise and work with inmates of the jail.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Of:
  • Procedures and equipment required to prepare and serve a high volume of meals in an institutional setting.
  • Necessary safety and sanitation procedures and precautions related to the preparation, service and storage of food and supplies in a high volume, institutional setting.
  • Equipment and facility clean up and upkeep procedures.
  • Basic record keeping practices and security precautions for working with inmates in a secured detention facility.

Ability to:
  • Follow recipes and prepare, cook and serve a wide variety of foods in a high volume, institutional setting.
  • Use and clean a variety of volume of cooking equipment.
  • Maintain kitchen and related areas in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions; provide lead direction, guidance and instruction to kitchen workers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work in an institutional kitchen setting.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed in the class specification . Equivalent to one year of food preparation, service and clean up in a large institutional or similar volume setting.

Candidates must pass a sanitation and safety certification course immediately after hire.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109.) Employment at the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
