The City of Costa Mesa invites applications for the following current vacancies in the Public Works Department:

  • 2 Full-Time Vacancies - Engineering Division
The vacancies may be filled at either the Engineering Technician I, Engineering Technician II or Engineering Technician III level depending on the qualifications of the candidate.

CURRENT SALARY:

Engineering Technician I: $59,640 - $79,932 annually ($28.67 - $38.43 per hour)
Engineering Technician II:
$66,588 - $89,220 annually ($32.01 - $42.89 per hour)
Engineering Technician III:
$73,188 - $98,076 annually ($35.19 - $47.15 per hour)

Effective July 2024: 3% salary increase

THE CURRENT POSITIONS - ASSIGNED TO ENGINEERING:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of sub-professional office and field engineering work related to land surveying, mapping, design, right of way, drafting, plan checking, capital improvement projects and provides support to professional engineering staff.

Essential Functions

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

Engineering Technician I: This is the entry-level class in this series. Under close supervision, incumbents perform a variety of sub-professional engineering office work.

Engineering Technician II: This is the journey-level class in the series, positions at this level are distinguished from the Engineering Technician I by the performance of the full range of assigned duties, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Incumbents may provide training and guidance to employees in lower level classifications.

Engineering Technician III: This is the advanced journey level classification in the series. This class is distinguished from the Engineering Technician II by performing the most complex and responsible sub-professional engineering work. It is further distinguished from the Assistant Engineer in that the latter is the entry level into the professional engineering series.

Positions in the Engineering Technician class series are flexibly staffed. Incumbents normally advance to the higher level after gaining sufficient experience, demonstrating proficiency to meet the requirements of higher level, and successful performance.

Qualification Guidelines

A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of this classification is as follows:

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Engineering Technician I : Graduation from high school or its equivalent, supplemented by college coursework in engineering, mathematics, or a related field and some experience performing drafting, design, civil or traffic engineering work.

Engineering Technician II: Graduation from high school or its equivalent, supplemented by college coursework in engineering, mathematics, or a related field and one (1) year of engineering technician experience at a level equivalent to Engineering Technician I as stated above.

Engineering Technician III: Two years of college coursework in engineering, mathematics, or a related field and two (2) years of progressively responsible engineering technician experience at a level equivalent to Engineering Technician I or II as stated above. One (1) year of additional experience directly related to this position may substitute for one (1) year of the required education.

An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform essential functions may also be considered.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE:

Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class C California Driver's License, or higher, before date of appointment is required. Revocation of license during employment may result in disciplinary action or reassignment.

Supplemental Information

PUBLIC EMPLOYEE DISASTER SERVICE WORKER:

In accordance with Government Code Section 3100 - all City of Costa Mesa employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster

New employees contribute 9% of their salary on a pre-tax basis towards the 2%@60 or 2%@62 CalPERS retirement formula depending on eligibility.

Salary Increases:
  • Effective July 2024: 3% increase

Employees receive the following health insurance flexible benefits contribution:
  • Current: $1,600monthly
  • Effective January 2025: $1,650monthly


The City does not participate in the Social Security system; however, federal mandate requires new employees to contribute 1.45% of wages to Medicare. As a condition of employment, all new employees are required to enroll and participate in the direct deposit program.
