About the Fremont Police Department
Fremont Police Department
is the law enforcement agency for the City of Fremont, California. As of 2024, the department consists of over 300 staff, of which more than 200 are sworn personnel, and more than 100 are professional staff. Fremont Police Department was first established under the direction of Chief Richard E. Condon on July 1, 1958. At that time, it was staffed by one Lieutenant, three Sergeants, two investigators, one juvenile officer, 17 patrol officers, a secretary, and a clerk. By the end of 1958, there were a total of 25 officers serving a population of 29,000 people in the City of Fremont. In 1966, Fremont PD grew to 82 officers, serving a population of 88,000. The department continues to grow as demand for services increased. Today, Fremont Police Department is one of the most reputable police agencies in the State, serving the 4th largest city in the Bay Area.

Police Equipment Room Assistant Specification
Definition

Under general supervision of the Equipment Room Specialist, assists with the coordination of Equipment Room operations. Performs a wide variety of duties involving the inventory control of police equipment, supplies, and fleet.

Class Characteristics

This classification is responsible for coordinating and completing inventory control, storage, and disbursement of police equipment and fleet. This class differs from the higher level classification, Police Equipment Room Specialist in that the latter has the responsibility to provide lead direction and schedule the work of regular and temporary staff in the equipment room. Successful performance in this class requires the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment; learn the department's policies and practices; demonstrate knowledge of modern inventory control and process improvement; and possess the ability to solve problems using good judgment. Incumbents must be able to work holidays and irregular duty assignments for coverage as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with coordinating daily operations of the Equipment room.
  • Assists with maintaining the current inventory control system and suggests system improvements.
  • Suggests and implements improvements to the current inventory control system for the Police Equipment Room.
  • Issues and collects police equipment to Police Department staff (e.g. rifles, batteries, radios, etc.)
  • Signs for delivers and issues visitor badges for vendors.
  • Stocks the Equipment Room with necessary office supplies, performs vehicle trunk audits, prepares first aid and trauma kits for vehicles, provides supplies to the Detention Center and Animal Shelter, prepares vehicles for special events (e.g. Shop with a Cop, parades, etc.).
  • Assists the Specialist with the coordination of radio repairs, vehicle repair and report writing computers repair.
  • Periodically required to drive in fulfillment of transporting police vehicles.
  • Reports first floor building maintenance issues to PD Maintenance.
  • Coordinates the charging of fire extinguishers and inspections.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co- workers and other City employees using principles of good customer service.

  • May participate in hiring Equipment Room staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: Modern inventory control methods and techniques; modern office management practices and methods; computer equipment and software applicable to assignment; ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

Skill in: Critical thinking, multitasking, problem solving, conflict resolution, process improvement and customer service including calmly interacting with uncooperative customers.

Ability to: Assist in providing lead direction and training; learn and follow proper weapon handling procedures; maintain secure and safe inventory control for law enforcement equipment; understand and apply department policies and procedures as well as state mandated statutes; multitask prioritize, and problem solve in a fast-paced and high stress work environment; work effectively in a highly structured, rank organized environment.

Education/Experience

Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory job performance would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be: completion of High School or GED and one year of progressively responsible, full-time work experience in inventory control, property, evidence, or related experience.

Experience with law enforcement/public safety inventory control is highly desirable.

Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements

Possession of a Class C California driver's license is required at the time of appointment. Failure to possess or maintain the valid required license shall result in discipline up to and including termination of employment.
