Coordinates youth and adult sports programs to include establishing teams, recruiting and scheduling coaches, scheduling facilities and assigning staff; monitoring timesheets. Coordinates aquatics programs to include recruiting and scheduling seasonal staff, developing and training staff to perform lifeguarding, water safety, swim instruction, first aid, CPR, and other related instruction for aquatic staffing. Assists in the preparation and coordination of recreation program schedule of events, activities and offerings. Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phone, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, conducting arts/crafts activities, assisting with registrations and reservations, making arrangements for rental and use of Recreation facilities, helping set up tables and chairs for classes, etc. Participates in recruitment, advertising, and selection of staff. Supervises and trains staff; prioritizes and assigns tasks; prepares work schedules; develops staff skills and conducts performance evaluations; provides direction and guidance in technical and procedural issues. Coordinates facility volunteer program as needed to run successful programs and events. Promotes, organizes and stimulates good relationships with neighborhood and community groups and other agencies; interprets and explains City programs and philosophies to groups and individuals, community resources, committees, staff and volunteers. Assists in ensuring safety of participants and facility users. Recognizes safety issues and seeks assistance through appropriate personnel to review and rectify the issue as required in compliance with city, county, State and Federal laws, regulations and standards. Seeks and coordinates partnership opportunities with organizations, businesses, schools, other departments and other interested parties to advance the overall goals of the department and advisory commission to further recreation programs. Monitors program(s) budget and expenses to identify and resolve problems and priorities. Monitors and reviews trends in recreation programs and technology advancements, and recommends improvements in programs and/or processes. Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED is required and six (6) months of parks, recreation or other related experience. Minimum of 60 hours training or schooling in the area of youth development, recreation, education or closely related field is required for some positions. Officiating certification preferred, but not required. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: City policies and procedures. Policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using municipal recreational facilities, programs and equipment. Equipment used in recreational and sports programs. Recreation Services Division is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in employment as a pottery instructor for adults. Under general supervision of the Recreation Services Coordinator, pottery instructors are responsible for teaching pottery techniques through lecture and demonstrations. Classes are run year-round and meet once a week for 3 hours. Class sessions are six weeks long and include a week break for cleaning and restocking after two consecutive class sessions (every 12 weeks). Description TEMPORARY POTTERY INSTRUCTOR (Recreation Instructor 2 - Job Code 9523) Hours: 3 to 9 hours/week. Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Recreation Services Division is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in employment as a pottery instructor for adults. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Incumbents in this class are primarily responsible for the general supervision of counselors and children enrolled in the program; planning age-appropriate curriculum for children; establishing and maintaining supportive relationships with children and parents; and all safety protocols. This class can be distinguished from the class of Day Camp Counselor because incumbents in this class are responsible for the overall direction, curriculum and staffing of the program area. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Incumbents may not perform all duties. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Develop and lead the implementation of curriculum, including teaching, overseeing, and/or coaching activities, which may include arts and crafts, group games, and sports; maintains group and individual discipline and code of conduct. Facilitate safe and positive recreation experiences; ensure a safe environment; assess and minimizes risks; assess and respond to potential injuries and prepare incident reports. Maintain accurate attendance and complete required records; maintain appropriate confidential records. Manage the storage and inventory of equipment and supplies. Participate in meeting and training sessions. Maintain good public relations. Oversees all camp communication to parents, providing regular updates, filling out incident reports and establishing behavior contracts when necessary. At all times, demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues, supervisors and the public. Performs other duties as assigned. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this position. The functions of this position are performed indoors and/or outdoors depending on season. Incumbents must wear an appropriate uniform with identification and protective equipment. The environment requires working in climate-controlled indoor environments as well as various weather conditions, including heat and sunshine when outdoors. Specialized aspects of the work environment may also include high noise levels, interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing safety and departmental policies and procedures. Incumbents may be assigned an irregular working schedule including weekends, early mornings, evenings and holidays and may have to travel between various locations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to have: hearing and speech adequate to communicate in person, by telephone, and to speak loudly in a noisy setting; vision adequate to clearly distinguish distance, color, depth perception and persons to identify signs of distress; bodily movement adequate to frequently sit, stand, walk, run, jump, climb, reach, turn, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, and push/pull; ability to raise arms above shoulder height; manual dexterity adequate to grasp objects, use fine manipulation, write and operate office machines and equipment; strength and endurance to perform medium to heavy physical work, perform lifting and carrying of items/persons up to 50 pounds, and work outdoors in the sun for prolonged periods of time. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Ability and Skill to: Work with adults, children and families participating in a variety of recreational activities. Monitor compliance with District regulations and policies, and general safety practices related to recreation activities; firmly but tactfully enforce rules and regulations. React quickly and calmly in emergencies. Administer first aid, CPR and/or artificial respiration. Maintain discipline, order and safety in a crowded and loud environment. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Communicate effectively with a wide range of people. Operate office equipment including computers, scanners, calculators, printers, and copiers. Respond appropriately to changing situations and stressful conditions. Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of the work. Knowledge of: Principles and methods used in organizing, conducting, and supervising engaging recreational activities. Common crafts, sports, games, and recreation activities appropriate for school-age children. Basic youth development principles. Computer skills to include Microsoft Office. Basic first aid and safety practices and procedures. Customer service principles. Standard safety rules and regulations related to public recreation activities. Education/Experience/Training: Highschool diploma or equivalent. At least 4 years of experience working with elementary and teenage children in a structured or supervised program. Possession of or ability to obtain First Aid/CPR/AED certification within two-weeks of employment. Special Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age or older. Proof of eligibility to work in U.S. Ability to obtain Mandated Reporter Training Certification may be required. Must pass a fingerprint and/or backgrounds clearance prior to employment. Completion of the Hepatitis B vaccination series is recommended.
