Job Description

THE POSITION

The Stationary Engineer position performs duties for the SAFE Credit Union Convention & Performing Arts District, which is comprised of the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center, SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center, and the Memorial Auditorium. The Stationary Engineer position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment such as boilers, furnaces, refuse incinerators, pumps, fans, engines, turbines, generators, electrical, heating, ventilating equipment, and air conditioning and refrigeration systems. This position is also responsible for preparing equipment and material requisitions, determining work procedures, keeping records, and preparing reports. This position may also operate control consoles in control rooms.

The ideal candidate has the knowledge, technical skills, and experience needed to meet a variety of operation, maintenance, and repair needs for the District. The ideal candidate is experienced with performing duties safely and in accordance with safety standards and guidelines prescribed by federal, state, and local laws and regulations. The ideal candidate has experience in either a campus setting, buildings maintenance environment, or a hotel maintenance environment.

The ideal candidate preferably has experience with the following:
  • Building Automated systems
  • Computerized maintenance management systems for work orders
  • Understand the ordering of parts and equipment.
  • Understanding of closed loop water treatment
  • Fire Water & Life Safety Systems
  • Soldering
  • OSHA Compliance

Under general supervision installs, maintains, and repairs heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation, electronic control and pneumatic systems, and performs maintenance and repair work on electrical, plumbing, and both low and high pressure boilers, and does general facility maintenance in a large building complex.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The job of Stationary Engineer differs from that of Senior Stationary Engineer in that the Stationary Engineer is a journey level position with no responsibility for supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Install, operate, repair, and develop preventative maintenance programs for heating, electronic controls, air conditioning, ventilating, pneumatic, and refrigeration systems.
- Maintain and repair plumbing, electrical, and high and low pressure boiler systems.
- Install, calibrate, and maintain pneumatic, electrical and electronic controls.
- Perform preventive maintenance on fire control system and on all mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Inspect and test equipment and systems as to operating efficiency by reading blueprints and performing on-site inspections.
- Record problems and perform necessary repairs.
- Report major problems to supervisor, verbally or in writing.
- Recommend changes to improve efficiency and economy and to conserve energy.
- Maintain boiler rooms, equipment rooms and other areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Repair or replace defective seating, doors and door hardware, locks, restroom fixtures and equipment, floors, walls, tile, chair carts, risers, etc.
- Use welding equipment to repair or fabricate equipment as needed.
- Keep daily log book and prepare other necessary reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

- Principles involved in heating, ventilating, air conditioning, electrical, electronic and pneumatic controls, plumbing and refrigeration systems, and the proper repair techniques for these systems.
- General building maintenance and repair, including plumbing, electrical, and minor carpentry and painting.
- Preventive maintenance chemicals and other materials used in boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and similar equipment.
- Current local building, plumbing, and electrical codes.
- Energy conservation products and techniques.

Ability to:

- Adjust and calibrate pneumatic, electric and electronic controls connected with air circulation systems.
- Use testing equipment for electronics, pneumatics, air-flow, speed, temperature, humidity, etc.
- Use welding equipment, small power tools such as saws, drills, grinders, etc., and hand tools such as wrenches, pliers, hammers, ratchet socket sets, etc., in a proper and safe manner.
- Communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing.
- Read blueprints and electrical diagrams.
- Analyze situations accurately and take effective action.
- Maintain records and prepare reports.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees and the general public.

Experience and Education:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Three years of experience as a stationary engineer with responsibility for the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, air conditioning, electrical, ventilating, high and low pressure boilers, and similar systems.

Education:

Ability to read and write English at a level necessary for efficient job performance.

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

Special Qualifications:

- A valid California Class III Driver License is required for appointment to this classification, and must be maintained in order to continue employment in the classification. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.
- Must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays as required.
- Must be able to lift and carry heavy parts and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Must not be affected by heights.
- Must have normal hearing.
- Eyesight must be corrected to 20/20.
- Must be able to climb stairs and ladders and to crawl into and work in small, closed-in spaces.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

3. Eligibility : Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate’s eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Stationary Engineer examination.

4. Screening Committee : (Pass/Fail)- All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications, as stated on the job announcement, for applications selected by the hiring department.

5. Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan/fingerprinting. If applicable, candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department.
