Nature of Work:

CERTIFIED TREATMENT PLANT OPERATORS (A/B/C) perform skilled work in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant during a permanent or rotating shift. Responsible for the efficient operation of a wastewater treatment plant and routine adjustments to equipment, machinery and operating controls. Expected to exercise some independent judgment in making adjustments to machinery, equipment and related control apparatus in accordance with established procedures and standards and may exercise limited supervision over subordinate operators. Candidate will be engaged in maintaining and operating various types of pumps, motors, grinders and belt presses, cleaning screens, removing solid matters and collecting sewage and sludge samples. Unusual or major problems are reported to a shift supervisor for resolution.

TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR TRAINEE is an entry-level position that requires the desire to learn and progress in the field of wastewater treatment and water reclamation. Performs duties under the supervision of the Chief Operator/Shift Supervisor. Duties in the operation of the Treatment Plant include minor maintenance work and preventive maintenance, monitoring wastewater treatment process and equipment, collecting samples, general maintenance of buildings and equipment, maintaining logs on process and equipment, and monitoring alarm system and alerting Shift Supervisor on duty when appropriate. Drives pick-up truck and golf cart; rides bicycle; operates pumps, blowers, etc. Work shift may vary; most weekends and some holidays required.

WORK SCHEDULE: Facility is staffed 8 hours a day / 7 days a week. Staffing hours may increase at any time based on Division needs. Regular shift assignment is determined according to procedure based on seniority and is subject to change based on Division needs. Weekends and holidays required.

Minimum Requirements

ALL LEVELS:
  • Florida driver license required at time of employment.
  • Must obtain security clearance and GOAA ID within 90 days of employment and maintain same.
  • Must be able reliably to be contacted in case of an emergency work situation.
  • Must pass annual respirator physical.
  • No facial hair allowed between the face and sealing surface of the respirator face piece:
    Employees must be clean shaven at the start of their assigned work shift .
CERTIFIED TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR C : High school diploma or equivalent, successful completion of training course for operators, one year treatment plant experience, and a Class C Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License, or other approved training and experience in accordance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) regulations.

CERTIFIED TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR B : Same as "C" above except requires Class B License and three years treatment plant experience.

CERTIFIED TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR A : Same as "C" above except requires Class A License and five years treatment plant experience.

TREATMENT PLANT TRAINEE : High school graduation or GED and successful completion of science courses that related to wastewater treatment, water reclamation, or other related courses, or other approved training and experience which demonstrates the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the duties of this job. Must obtain State Class "C" Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license within two years of hire and assume full duties of plant operator; a one-time extension of six months may be granted based on performance and approval by management and Human Resources. Valid Florida driver license required.

VALID DRIVER LICENSE FROM ANY STATE MUST BE PRESENTED AT TIME OF INTERVIEW. FLORIDA DRIVER LICENSE MUST BE PRESENTED WITHIN 30 DAYS OF EMPLOYMENT.

DOCUMENTATION OF STATE WASTEWATER LICENSE MUST BE PROVIDED WITH ONLINE APPLICATION TO BE QUALIFIED FOR A, B, OR C OPERATOR . OUT-OF-STATE LICENSED OPERATORS ARE HIRED AS TRAINEES UNTIL FLORIDA CERTIFICATION IS ATTAINED.
