Performs preventative and repair maintenance of motors, pumps, lift stations, sewer/storm water collection systems and related wastewater equipment. This work should be performed with minimum technical guidance. The ability to perform basic electrical troubleshooting and any related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Incumbent receives direct supervision from the Electrical Maintenance Supervisor and general direction from the Designated Operator in Charge and Wastewater Treatment Manager. No supervision is exercised by incumbent.

  • Maintains and repairs motor, pumps, valves, piping, pump stations and related city equipment and buildings.
  • Perform periodic inspections of all plant and pump station equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Supports coordination of the plant’s preventative maintenance program.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of maintenance and repairs performed.
  • Advises superiors of actual or potential problems with operating equipment.
  • Assist with maintaining inventory and supply of replacement parts.
  • Work as assigned with electrical, operations, laboratory and pretreatment staff.
  • Assist with installation of plant-related work, including but not limited to fabrication and welding.
  • Install new or replace old equipment or piping as assigned.
  • Operates computer and necessary software effectively.


Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Installation, diagnosis, operating and repair characteristics of wastewater plant mechanical systems, including repairing and maintaining motors, pumps, boilers, hydraulic equipment, generators, and other plant equipment.
  • Particular safety hazards are those associated with wastewater plant operations in the discharge thereof, and conditions that may result from mechanical malfunctions.
  • General understanding of plant functions and on-the-job training are beneficial.
  • General principles and practices of project management.


Ability to:
  • Perform advanced level mechanical maintenance work including the troubleshooting of equipment for both minor and major repair work.
  • Read and interpret drawings, sketches and diagrams.
  • Use and care for tools and equipment of the mechanical/maintenance trade.
  • Develop and maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to use computers and electronic communications devices in the course of work.
  • Diagnose, locate, and adjust defects in basic and advanced mechanical systems and equipment.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience:
  • Minimum four years of experience involving Journey Level skilled mechanical and/or electrical maintenance on major equipment and systems like those use at the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
OR

  • Two years of experience performing duties directly comparable to those of Industrial Mechanic for the City of Chico.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Driver License throughout employment. Class A or B licensure is highly desired.
  • Possession of a CWEA Plant Mechanical Technologist Grade II certification is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use their hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to walk; talk and hear; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.

The employee frequently must lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color perception; and the ability to adjust focus to distinguish colors of electric wiring, and to hear audible alarms, such as chemical and equipment failure alarms.

Requires use of motor vehicles, cranes, heavy equipment, generators, multi-meters, pumps, gauges, valves, grease guns and common power and hand tools; shovels, wrenches, detection and leveling devices; radio, phone, calculator, computer and a variety of mechanical repair tools and equipment.

Environmental CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works outside in all weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electric shock, and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. Some tasks may be performed in cramped quarters, and in a variety of atmospheric conditions, weather extremes and temperatures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
