Description:

The Utility Locator identifies, locates, and marks the location of the county’s underground utilities. These include traffic loops, storm water and drainage system, irrigation mainline, and power feed, to ensure safe and undamaged utilities during excavation. Must be able to read and interpret utility maps, design plans, and aerial imagery to facilitate locating utilities. Utilizes and retains accurate records in Operations Management System and GIS mapping system. Performs assignments in hazardous traffic environments and is required to use appropriate safety equipment and procedures. Position reports to Grounds Maintenance Supervisor Senior.

Hiring Range:$27.36 - $30.40 USD Hourly

Full compensation range for this job profile: $24.32 -$30.40 - $36.47

Essential duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Operate and maintain electronic equipment consisting of magnetic field path locator and metal detectors used to locate traffic loops, storm pipes, manholes, irrigation mainline, and power feed to ensure safe and undamaged utilities during excavation. Actively keep current with new utility locating equipment, GIS and mapping systems, and GPS locating technology. Operate computer equipment including laptop, tablet, and smart phone.
  • Maintain accurate records of completed locate requests in Operations Management System utilizing a tablet or computer. Must be able to utilize Locator Logix software. Read, understand, and interpret utility maps, engineering design plans, prints, and aerial imagery to identify traffic loops, manholes, irrigation mainline,power feed, and storm waterdrainage systems. Record and report incorrect or missing information on County owned utilities and communicate information to appropriate County personnel.
  • Prioritize work activities by reviewing all locate requests to determine travel routes and timelines. Mark the location of underground utility assets on roadways and right-of-way, as appropriate and needed, using required spray paints, flags, or other marking devices. Complete all proper documentation for each utility locate ticket.
  • Conduct field meetings with contractors or customers.
  • Resolve problems of non-routine situations. Respond to emergency situations as required.
  • Perform equipment and vehicle pre/post-trip inspections as defined by federal guidelines, and inspect other items affecting safe operations. Perform routine cleaning and minor maintenance, as necessary.
  • Inspect and prepare all equipment for use by performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on trucks and equipment, including fueling, cleaning, lubricating, and changing tires. Plan and request maintenance service and repair for specific equipment. Prepare equipment for specific uses by making necessary modifications.
  • Report incidents, accidents, traffic violations, damage to equipment, vehicles, and utilities.
  • Ensure the various components of the Road & Bridge Safety Management Program are adhered to including the proper use of PPE. Ensure a safe environment consistent with regulatory and organizational requirements and needs.Must adhere to all other relative policies and procedures.
  • Flag and set up traffic control devices to ensure work zone requirements are met.
  • Keep time, activity, mileage records, and logs.
  • Responsible for assisting with the basic development and training of fellow employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned at varying locations.
  • Must be available to respond to emergency locate tickets 24 hours a day seven days a week. Report to assigned shop within one hour of being called.

Minimum Qualifications :
  • High School Diplomaor GED.
  • 2 years of work-related experience in utility locating.
  • Within 12 months of employment, requirement to possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake restriction removed and Tanker endorsement as well as a valid Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card.
  • Valid Driver’s License for 2 consecutive years prior to hire date. If from out of state, must obtain a Colorado Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be at least 18 years old by hire date.
  • Respond to emergency locate tickets 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and reportto an assigned shop within one hour of being called.


Preferred Qualifications :
  • May be required to obtain a Flagger certification.
  • Experience with public works.
  • Ability to navigate use of technology and smart phones.


Additional Job Information:
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, background check, and Motor Vehicle Record check.
  • Offer of employment is contingent on passing a criminal history, MVR check, background check, and physical exam.
  • To be considered you must not have any major violations, and no more than one DUI, DWI, DWAI conviction in the past three years.
  • Must provide a valid Commercial Driver's License and DOT medical card, and current copy of your full CDLIS Motor Vehicle Record at the time of interview, if you currently hold a CDL.
