Seasonal Ground Maintenance Worker

Part Time, Until End of Season

Non-Exempt

No Benefits and Non VRS Eligible

Job Summary/ Objective:

Performs routine semi-skilled work maintaining active community parks, grounds, and buildings.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

N/A

Essential Functions:
  • Operates commercial landscape equipment, prunes and cuts trees and shrubs, preparation of high-quality athletic fields.
  • Performs daily park and facility preparation.
  • Performs semi-skilled repair maintenance, custodial activities and other related park maintenance tasks.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on commercial/landscape equipment.
  • Assist with special activities and volunteer events.
  • Meets, greets, and assist the public with park questions and needs.
  • Performs related tasks as required.


Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventative maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment.
  • Some knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.
  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in equipment operations.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods occasionally under unfavorable weather conditions.


Required Education and Experience:
  • Some experience in the operation of automotive equipment and the performance of manual labor.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license.


Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Work frequently requires strenuous physical tasks, including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying items weighing 20-50 pounds, with occasional lifting of times weighing over 100 pounds.
  • Prolonged operation of mowing equipment both riding/walking over rough terrain.
  • Work environment routinely exposes employee to potential major injuries and adverse weather, with occasional exposure to hazardous substances.
  • Some contact with office personnel, other staff members, vendors and park users is required.


Remote Work :

This position is not eligible for remote work. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Salary Range:

The hiring range for this position is $16.00 - $16.64 hour Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. This is a part time, FLSA non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, §P-60.
