Job Description:

Overview

To perform specialized work conducting and directing recreational programs and activities at multiple designated parks, athletic fields, playgrounds or other recreational facilities. Promotes good relationships with neighborhood and activity groups. To determine, program, schedule, direct and inspect the activities of the Recreation Attendants, Recreation Specialists, Facility Maintenance Technicians, Interns, Volunteers and Contractors and to assure all safety rules are followed.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for professional recreation work in directing and programming specified activities at recreation facilities, athletic fields or playgrounds.
  • Conducts formal and informal training sessions with other staff as necessary.
  • Acts as Duty Manager as assigned to any department facilities.
  • Assists in providing a healthy and safe environment for the general public visiting the facility and reports safety issues to supervisor.
  • Supervises subordinates in the performance of duties, including custodial, swimming pool duties and recreation programs.
  • Establishes work schedules to assure timely completion of work activities.
  • Maintains time and work records and prepares associated reports.
  • Inspects and evaluates work of subordinates for quality and adherence to standards.
  • Trains and coaches the employees on assigned crew.
  • Provides input and insight on performance levels and developmental needs of employees on assigned crew to be included in performance appraisals.
  • Responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of recreation facilities.
  • Performs light custodial duties, i.e., maintains recreation equipment, maintains cleanliness of facilities, performs set up and break down duties for activities and special events.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate cash receipts, point of sales function and cash handling.
  • Responsible for creating flyers, posters, banners and other aspects of advertising and marketing for various programs.
  • Ability to create and maintain avenues of fundraising opportunities, sponsorships, donations and partnerships.
  • Assists supervisors with programming, facilities and outreach needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates Degree from an accredited college preferred with course work in sports management, recreation and parks administration or closely related field which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Two years of recreation experience; or the equivalent in education, training, and experience, which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.
  • Bloodbourne Pathogens and AED/CPR certifications are required within six months of hire.

  • Ability to maintain clear and comprehensive records and reports as specified by the department.
  • Ability to schedule and maintain a staff at the assigned facilities.
  • Ability to receive and understand oral and written orders and execute those orders effectively.
  • Ability to give oral and written orders clearly and ensure those orders are followed effectively.
  • Knowledge of desktop computer systems, equipment and software including recreational software, spreadsheet, database and word processing programs.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform tasks which require some degree of physical agility and strength in a safe/efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook and other similar computer programs.
  • Ability to work changing and irregular shifts, nights, weekends and holidays.


Responsibility

Under the direction of and responsible to the Department Head or designated representative. Supervises assigned Recreation Attendants, Recreation Specialists, Facility Maintenance Technicians, Interns, volunteers and contractors.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Work requires considerable physical activity including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing and crouching. Incumbent is subject to inside and outside activities with a variety of weather changes or atmospheric conditions. Incumbent may be exposed to activities such as noise and jobs with potential hazards that may require special protection and/or special safety precautions. Visual acuity is required to inspect work completed by crews for accuracy and quality. Incumbent is required to hear sufficiently to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Manual dexterity is required to operate equipment in performance of duties.
