Job Description and Duties Under the direction of the Assistant Chief of the California Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division, the Bureau Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Strategic Transport & Technology Services Branch and the Production & Network Services Branch within the Technology Support Bureau (TSB). The TSB is responsible for providing infrastructure services to the Department of Justice (DOJ), the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS), the Criminal Justice Information System control software, and the computer operating systems and their environments. Type of Appointment : Full-Time, Probationary Collective Bargaining Unit : Statewide University Police Association (SUPA) - Unit 8 Job Classification : Corporal Anticipated Hiring Range : $70,116 - $96,540 annually Work Hours : This position works a 3/12 schedule (3 days per week, 12 hour shifts), with an 8-hour pay-back shift every other Wednesday. Schedule will be based on operational need. Recruitment Closing Date : Open until filled THE DEPARTMENT: The University Police Department (UPD) is responsible for law enforcement, physical security, and emergency response at Cal Poly Pomona. The department is staffed by trained police officers, professional civilian staff and auxiliary personnel and is operational 24 hours-a-day, year-round. The peace officers of this department have statewide police authority, and are vested with the same law enforcement powers and responsibilities as the municipal police or sheriff's departments in any California community. The department serves as "first responder" for a broad range of crisis issues on the campus including medical aid calls, injuries and environmental emergencies. The department is responsible for response to all emergencies, crime reports and investigations on campus (except homicides and missing persons per the Kristin Smart Act). In addition, the department offers a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the safety and security of the community and support the mission of the university. These responsibilities are carried out through a set of core values that reflect commitment to the highest standards of excellence and incorporate the community oriented policing philosophy. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: General Law Enforcement: Enforce local, county, and state laws. Employee investigates criminal and non-criminal occurrences, makes arrests, interviews witnesses, transports prisoners, and testifies in court proceedings as required. Patrols the campus and other property owned or operated by the University using various vehicular, foot, and stationary assignments. Investigates traffic collisions, enforces traffic laws, provides safety escorts, responds to radio calls accordingly, responds to emergencies as needed and performs other duties as assigned. Training: Participates in training which includes classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Employee must meet all training requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training and Department policy. Employee will assist the department with hands-on field training of officers. Serves as the Field Training Officer for new recruits, Student Assistants, and Parking staff. Report Writing: Writes reports to accurately describe events as they occur or as they are described to the employee. Includes drafting traffic collision sketches and crime scene diagrams as needed. May be required to generate reports on a computer. Communications: Participation in public speaking as requested by superior officer e.g. address housing residents, conduct public tours, safety talks. Communicate with a multiethnic and diverse community. Community Interaction: Builds rapport between professional/civilian employees, students, volunteers, staff, faculty and visitors by promoting public trust through ethical behavior and adherence to a set of core values as set forth by the Division of Administrative Affairs. Seeks opportunities to foster partnerships and build diverse teams within the university community. Supports the principles of community oriented policing. Leadership: Function as assistant watch commander or patrol agent responsible for leading a shift and providing training and/or direction to officers in the field QUALIFICATIONS: Eligibility to be a police officer in the State of California, graduation from a P.O.S.T. academy, a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing Two or more years of active law enforcement experience. Thorough knowledge and understanding of law enforcement methods and procedures, criminal codes and laws, and investigative techniques and procedures. The Corporal independently performs general law enforcement and patrol duties and a variety of specialized work assignments. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Ability to provide effective leadership and direction to field personnel during assigned shift Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the use of firearms, defensive tactics and emergency vehicle operation.
